Twenty disk-shaped aluminized ( beta-NiAl) CMSX-4 single crystal superalloy specimens were oxidized in air at 788, 871, 954, and 1010 degreesC for 1000, 2500, 5000, 7500, and 10,000 h. Phase constituents and the residual stress of thermally grown oxide (TGO), as well as microstructural degradation in the aluminized layer of CMSX-4, were examined by using photostimulated luminescence spectroscopy (PSLS), optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM).
