Development of a Bridge Inspection Software

The present bridge inspection regimen typically uses manual collection, compilation and transfer of data. Final reports are then typed into pre-printed forms. A computer software has been developed by University of Central Florida under the auspices of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to automate the collection, compilation and preparation of the Cover Sheet, Condensed Inspection Report and the Comprehensive Report of Deficiencies. These forms are parts A and B of the Bridge Inspection Report required by FDOT. Approximately ten thousand BASIC instructions were required to develop the software. The software is highly interactive and user friendly. Previous inspection data are displayed for reference before new ones are requested. Built-in checks ensures validity of input data. Codes are utilized to minimize typing in the generation of comments. The data are stored electronically to provide interfacing with other softwares. The program has been field tested in actual inspections. Results showed significant time savings on report preparation. Savings in space requirement for storage of data is germane. Although the computer program is written in a format suitable for the Paravant RHC44 handheld computer, it works perfectly in laptop and desktop computers
