Abandono de la lactancia materna asociada a la mastitis en madres atendidas en el Hospital Distrital Santa Isabel. El Porvenir

Breastfeeding provides many benefits for both mothers and children, but there are cases inwhich this noble practice has been abandoned attributed to being primiparous mothers, havingto work away from home, perceiving that the child is dissatisfied or problems related to thebreast and the nipple resulting from the inefficient technique to breastfeed the child and itsrelation to the appearance of mastitis, an inflammation of the breast, which usually occurs in thepostpartum period. The goal of the present research was to determine if there is a relationshipbetween the breastfeeding abandonment and mastitis in mothers attended in the Santa IsabelDistrict Hospital, El Porvenir. The type of study was descriptive with a correlational design. Forthe collection of data, a data collection form validated through expert judgment was used. Ahundred and six (106) medical records of the mothers seen in the gynecology - obstetrics wardof the aforementioned hospital during the period July – November 2011 were reviewed. Amongthe findings, it was evidenced that there is a significant relationship (p<0,5) between thepresence of mastitis and breastfeeding abandonment. It was determined that from 58,7% ofmothers who did not suffer mastitis, 7,5% abandoned breastfeeding compared to 45,3% ofmothers who suffered mastitis, where 17% abandoned this noble practice.La lactancia materna brinda muchos beneficios tanto para las madres como para los niños; pero, existen casos en los que se ha abandonado esta noble práctica, atribuidas a las causas de ser madres primíparas, tener que trabajar fuera del hogar, percibir que el niño queda insatisfecho o problemas relacionados con la mama y el pezón producto de la ineficiente técnica para amamantar al niño y su relación con la aparición de mastitis, una inflamación de la mama, que suele presentarse en el período postparto. La presente investigación, tuvo como objetivo determinar si existe relación entre el abandono de la lactancia materna y la mastitis en las madres atendidas en el Hospital Distrital Santa Isabel, El Porvenir. El tipo de estudio fue descriptivo, con un diseño correlacional. Para la recolección de datos se utilizó una ficha de recolección validada a través de un juicio de expertos. Se revisaron 106 historias clínicas de las madres atendidas en el consultorio de Gineco - Obstetricia del mencionado hospital durante el periodo Julio - Noviembre 2011. Entre los hallazgos se evidenciaron que existe relación significativa (p<0.05) entre la presencia de mastitis y el abandono de la lactancia materna. Se determinó que del 58,7% de madres que no sufrieron mastitis el 7,5% abandonó la lactancia materna en comparación al 45,3% de madres que sufrieron mastitis donde el 17% abandonó esta noble práctica.   DOI: dx.doi.org/10.18050/Cientifi-k.v5n1a9.201
