The aim of this paper is to explore how cultural differences influence ethnic grouping, and how ethnic conflict emerges between groups and sometimes explodes into bloodshed. After a review of the anthropological and sociological studies on ethnic groups, ethnicity, nation states and nationalism, the formation of the multiethnic state of Indonesia is discussed referring to B. Anderson\u27s famous concept of \u27imagined community\u27. Finally, I discuss cases of violent confrontations in contemporary Indonesia, especially East Timor (now under transitional UN administration) and Maluku, focusing on the political background of so-called ethnic conflicts
