This paper is an examination of how the free will of an individual is represented in two of the most outstanding plays of early modern drama: Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, and August Strindberg's Miss Julie. The approach taken is similar to that of Ervin Goffman in his well-known book, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life. It is different from Goffman's, however, in that the object of the ovservation and analysis is fictive characters in drama instead of real humans in everyday life.
