When dry weather continued, the people of the ancient world killed a bull or a horse, cut its neck and threw it into the river. The bull/horse was an incarnation of the water god. The blood of the killed bull/horse was supposed to stir the dying water god to make the rain fall. This means that a new season had begun. Thus the season in chaos was replaced by a new season. The king was a symbol of the seasons, linked with the change of weather. He was annually killed and resurrected by the young victim's blood. The victim was an incarnation of the king.
