The number of working women has been increasing strikingly. Their motivation to go to work is high. However, they are not treated justly as men in corporations. Many obstacles for women to obtain managerial positions still remain in most corporations. The current Japanese situation seems to be similar to the US situation about two decades ago. The purpose of this paper is to examine why women cannot gain high positions like men from the viewpoint of organizational psychology. I reviewed four explanations of women's work status and implications for change by Nieva and Gutek (1981).
