Three Reflections on the Spirit of Establishment: Liberty and Love as Seen From the Viewpoint of a Theology of Loyalty

St. Andrew University has derived its school motto from Jesus? words of calling: ?SEQUIMINI ME? (Mk. 1: 17). Following Jesus like Andrew did, thus, became the spirit of establishing St. Andrew University which is interpreted as signifying, at least within the context of the idea of a university, ?the spirit of liberty and love.? Professor Teruso Taniguchi?s essay, ?Possibilities of the Paradigm of ?World Citizens?: Concerning the Questions of How to Interpret and Apply St. Andrew University?s Spirit of Establishment,? is brilliantly demonstrating the way in which ?world citizens? can only make sense within the context of the ?Christian love of each and every one? (John 3: 16) thus accountable in the sense of ?active [or freely decision-making] citizens who embody an active citizenship.? I take Professor Taniguchi?s endeavor to represent a reinterpretation of the ontological truthfulness of the gospel from the perspective of a sociological integration of the given society in terms of ?loving each and every person.? The ontological significance of the divine love, as manifested in John 3: 16, has to come out freely and compassionately within a sociological reality of ?world citizenship.? If that is really the case, it means that the ontological significance of the divine love has its own inner urge toward such an active embodiment. The inner urge of the divine love has appeared in the Easter event in terms of what I call ?RE-MISSIO PECCATORUM? (namely, forgiveness / resending dynamics which is at work in the sinners or the disciples who once failed to follow Jesus). In what follows I will discuss the dynamics of RE-MISSIO PECCATORUM in a threefold manner: first, missiologically in reference to Leslie Newbigin?s understanding of mission as composed of ?mission,? ?missions,? and ?evangelism?; second, in terms of interreligious dialogue (esp. Buddhist-Christian dialogue) by reference to my proposal of a theology of loyalty; and third, homiletically, by reference to my sermon ?RE-MISSIO PECCATORUM? and its poetical articulation, ?Peter.?departmental bulletin pape
