ジャワ農村社会における家族と移動(橋内武教授退任記念号)

This paper aims to explore how families have survived in a rural Javanese village subject to drastic social change since the 1980s, focusing on the mobility (both domestic and global) of villagers. The research was conducted in the village of Purwosari (pseudonym) in the Bantul Regency of Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 1998 and 1999. In Javanese rural social life, the village, in which kin-derived relations prevail, is the unit of conformity for local customs. The household is the basic social unit in the community, and 79% of the current research sample conformed to the ideal composition of one nuclear family per household. When we focus on mobility, the village no longer appears as a closed community. The research shows that approximately 40% of the children born in the village moved away. Some went to urban areas to look for jobs, some moved to other islands under the transmigration program introduced by the Indonesian government. Since the 1980s, even global mobility has been found among the villagers, some of whom went to Saudi Arabia, Malaysia or Korea to work as migrant workers. This outward mobility makes it possible to sustain households which don\u27t own enough agricultural land to support their members. In conclusion, it would seem that the seeming stability of the village under study was closely linked to the dynamic mobility observed among its members
