This article illuminates a field in which the author works both as a planner and as a researcher: strategic physical planning for the renewal and reuse of industrial facilities. After reviewing the thought processes underlying the planning of industrial buildings and areas during the twentieth century, he discusses how the term "strategic planning" can be interpreted for use in practical planning situations.
