A systematic investigation of the use of electron probe microanalysis in various fields of mineralogical and metallurgical research is now being carried out at the Research Institute of Mineralogical Dressing and Metallurgy, Tohoku University. The present paper describes briefly specimen preparation, detectability of light element and some results on the determination of the composition of minerals, metals and non-metallic inclusions in steel. The chief obstacles to quantitative analysis are (a) the penetration and lateral diffusion of the incident electrons in the specimen, (b) the maximum current deliverable to the probe, (c) low efficiency of X-ray optics at light element. These obstacles will decrease in number by improvement in electro...
