During the last decade, various technologies such as slurry gelating, spacer, sintering, casting and foaming have been developed in the manufacturing iron-based porous and foamed materials. For example, SUS316L foam with porosity of 98% has been manufactured successfully by slurry gelation technology, and manufacture of lotus-type porous stainless steel having unidirectionally aligned pores by casting technology has been reported. On the other hand, foaming technology shows a potential to manufacture iron-based foamed materials with higher strength and a lower cost.
