In the emission spectrometric determination of carbon in steel, the spectral line C I 1930.9A has been utilized as an analytical line. However, an overlapping spectral line of aluminium interferes with this line, which accordingly, gives rise to a high analytical error when the aluminium content is above 0.2 per cent. So, the spectrochemical characters of the spectral line of aluminium were examined. In the results, it was clarified that the spectral line of aluminium could not be separated from that of C I 1930.9A. Therefore, a correction equation was investigated and discussed to eliminate the interference of aluminium, according to which the analytical precision of carbon was improved, especially under an arc-like excitation condition
