Stratigraphical and sedimentological studies in the Omoto-Tanohata district in the northeastern part of Iwate Prefecture, Northeast Japan, resulted in the recognition of a large scale overturned structure with isoclinal folding. The new order of the stratigraphic sequence of the Omoto-Tanohata district was established and the previously accepted wide distribution of the rocks of Cretaceous age should be substantiated for the Upper Jurassic System. This revised procedure has resulted in the classification of problems related with correlation, lithological similarity and age relationships within the Mesozoic terrain of the northern Kitakami massif.
