We first recall different methods for stellar population synthesis in galaxies, their respective successes and failures. We discuss a new approach to this problem, using a base of star clusters which depends on two parameters, Z and age. Results are presented for the 63 cluster base as well as for a sample of 164 nuclei in galaxies covering large ranges in morphological types and absolute luminosities. Special emphasis is given to the occurence of recent star formation in galactic nuclei
