BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis contributes to significant mortality and morbidity. Both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients with atherosclerosis and peripheral vascular disease are at increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease affecting all vascular beds.
