BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinal vascular disease that predominantly affects these preterm neonates. There are various known and proven risk factors for ROP including very low birth weight (VLBW) neonates weighing <1500g, prematurity (<32-34 weeks of gestation),hyperoxia, prolonged oxygen exposure , neonatal hyperbiluribinemia, intraventricular hemorrhage, poor post natal weight gain, infants born to mothers with Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), etc.But the risk factors leading on to severe stages of ROP are still very unclear.
