A Comparative study of Effectiveness of Homoeopathic Medicine with Conventional Medicine in the Pain Management after Tooth Extraction: A Randomised Clinical Trial

INTRODUCTION: The pain experienced by the patients after tooth extraction, when the local anesthesia effect vanishes make them stressed. This clinical study was to compare the efficacy of homoeopathic medicines with conventional medicines in the pain management after tooth extraction in the age group 15 to 55 yrs and also to assess the most commonly used homoeopathic medicines in post extraction pain management. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 60 cases in 15 to 55 yrs of age group suffering from post tooth extraction pain were selected from the OPD/ IPD of Sarada Krishna Homoeopathic Medical College Hospital and were categorized into 2 groups randomly, each with 30 patients. For group-A, Conventional medicines were administered. For group-B, indicated Homoeopathic medicines were given. The patients were asked to mark the intensity of pain (Visual Analogue Scale) for every 12 hours for 3 days and they were assessed on 3rd and 6th day postoperatively and all the changes were recorded and analyzed. Student t test was applied for analysing the difference in effectiveness of Conventional medicine and homoeopathic medicine in pain management after tooth extraction. RESULT AND CONCLUSION: In group A at the end of 24 hours, 11 (36.66%) patients showed marked improvement; 19 (63.33%) patients showed moderate improvement. In group B, 10 (33.33%) patients showed marked improvement; 20 (66.66%) had moderate improvement. In statistical analysis of the 24 hours after treatment effect, the p-value is not < 0.05, proving the result that there is no significance difference in post extraction pain management of Conventional medicine and Homoeopathic medicine.
