A Study of Microalbuminuria in Non-Diabetic Acute Ischemic Stroke: Prevalence and Stroke Severity among Individuals in the Age Group between 25 and 80 Years Reported in Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital

BACKGROUND: Microalbuminuria is an entity common to many of the risk factors causing stroke namely Diabetes Mellitus and Systemic Hypertension. However studies are yet to be reported whether it’s a risk factor on its own in the absence of other risk factors. Hence it would be easier to prevent stroke if its presence has been detected early. AIMS OF THE STUDY: 1. To estimate the prevalence of microalbuminuria in non-diabetic acute ischemic stroke. 2. To assess the stroke severity using NIHSS and MODIFIED RANKIN SCALE. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study conducted during the months of December 2014 and June 2015, the study sample being 53 patients who have been confirmed of having an ischemic stroke, reported at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. After a detailed history and clinical examination, investigations like a complete hemogram, liver and renal function tests, urine routine were done using the conventional methods to rule out the coexistence of other conditions that may affect the results of the study. Urine albumin has been taken at the time of admission a brain imaging to confirm the presence of an ischemic stroke. Prevalence is calculated. NIHSS was been calculated on day 1 and Modified Rankin Scale on day 15. The results have been compared among the microalbuminurics and the non-microalbuminurics. RESULTS: There was a significant correlation between the microalbuminurics and the NIHSS and Modified Rankin Scale. CONCLUSION: Prevalence was found out to be 52.8 percent. Microalbuminuria on itself is an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke and its severity and hence its early detection and treatment might help in preventing it
