Clinical Outcome of post partum intra uterine contraceptive device

Even though IUCD is easily available and costeffective, long term reversible contraceptive agent only < 2% of acceptors are adopting this. BACKGROUND: Aim of the study was to analyse the factors associated with acceptability of postpartum IUCD depending on the social /obstetric conditions/determine the rate of expulsion, continuation, removal, infection, relationship between post placental and intracesarean application of cu-t. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Study conducted at Govt Rajaji Hospital Madurai, from August 2013 to September 2014, women admitted for delivery were councelled, selection of clients according to medical eligibilty criteria, with no contraindications ,delivering either through labour natural or cesarean were opted, prior informed consent obtained. RESULTS : 75% of clients belong to the age group of 25 years, acceptance between educated and uneducated slow difference 54.4% educated, 45.6% uneducated, 63.2% primi gravida and 45.6% multigravida, GDM, HTN MP grade I, MS/MR 24% of the high risk pattern MEC and MEC2 and 3, 57% dehert by LN, 43% LSCS, 81.4% of clients IUCD was inserted in immediate post placental after delivery of patients. 385 patients come for follow up 62%, 89.2% clients were counseling for labour 10.8% booked case accepted. Expulsion rate 8.2%, 47.2% on pain, 13.6% bleeding and 4% infection, 62.8% continuation rate. Expulsion rate is higher in teenages < 18 years 10%, Expulsion is more in multi gravida 23,5%, Mode of delivery is not related with expulsion, 21 cases who were followed up at 6 weeks were insisting on femoral. 14 cases due to pain, 7 cases due to bleeding. CONCLUSION: Acceptance rate, continuation rate is higher in the parturients and is comparable to the other studies done. Awareness among the public is very low. Very effective counseling, high motivation in the women during the first stage and after delivery was the key success in the study. Both educated and uneducated women have misconception about the copper T. if it becomes routine and followed in delivered women the NPP goal can be achieved
