A comparative study of preservation or elective division of ilio inguinal nerve in lichenstein’s mesh repair in post operative pain perception

NEED FOR THE STUDY: As post-operative chronic pain following inguinal hernia repair is proposed to be due to nerve entrapment and prophylactic neurectomy can reduce the pain, this study was conducted to find out the effectiveness of post neurectomy pain perception. AIM OF THE STUDY: To study the effect of elective neurectomyin post operative pain perception following lichenstein's mesh repair METHODS: All male patients who are fit to undergo elective surgery with in the age of 18-70 years with unilateral inguinal hernia with no complications were taken for the study. Over a period of six months 50 patients were randomly divided into two equal groups: Group I: (study group) were subjected to elective division of ilioinguinal nerve during Lichenstein's mesh repair. Group II: (control group) were subjected to preservation of ilioinguinal nerve in lichenstein's mesh repair . Period of Study: Jan 2017- August 1017. Type of Study: comparative study. Sample Size: 50. CONCLUSION: By analyzing the various data’s available, it is concluded that ilioinguinal neurectomy provides chronic pain relief in post lichenstein's mesh repair. Hence should be considered as a method in reducing post-operative inguinodynia
