INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy –induced hypertensive disease (PIH), in particular preeclampsia/eclampsia, remain important causes of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. The prevalence of PIH was 43.1 per 1000 pregnancies in a retrospective population-based study of 200,000 births in North Carolina, USA (Savitz 1992). For the past ten years, PIH has been the major cause of maternal mortality in England and Wales, and 56 per cent of deaths due to PIH were attributable to eclampsia (DOH report on confidential enquiries into maternal deaths in the United Kingdom 1985-1987).
