Prevalence of Thyroid Dysfunction in Adult HIV Patients on Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapy Irrespective of Staging And Correlation Between TSH and CD4 Count.

This study was done to know the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in adult HIV patients on HAART irrespective of staging and correlation between the TSH and CD-4 count. METHODOLOGY: Patient attending ART centre in madras medical college in RGGGH are included in the study. Questionnaire and clinical examination was done and free T3, T4, TSH and CD-4 count was done. Sample size is 100. Study period is 6 months APRIL – 2014 to SEPTEMBER – 2014. RESULTS: The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in our study is 11% (11 out of 100 patients). Overt hypothyroidism – 2%, subclinical hypothyroidism – 9%. 8 patients are male sex and CD-4 count less than 200. There is significant negative correlation between CD-4 count and TSH (Pearson Chi-Square p value .000). CONCLUSION: There is increased prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in HIV patients on HAART especially male sex, low CD-4 count and longer duration of disease
