The aim of this paper is to show how intermediate and advanced learners of the Japanese language use metalingual expressions in a debate. First, we would like to show how metalingual expressions are used in both spoken and written language of Japanese, and to clarify them in terms of function. Next, we will discuss whether or not metalingual expressions used in a debate by learners of the Japanese language are effective, through showing how many metalingual expressions are uttered in a debate, and how they are functioning. And finally we will examine some problems when we make use of a debate in a classroom situation for improving speaking skills of learners of the Japanese language.departmental bulletin pape
