The Magrath Town Council is very concerned about proposed cutbacks in R.C.M.P. in Magrath and have forwarded the following letter to the Solicitor General, the Honorable K. Rostad. Dear Sir: Re: RCMP The Mayor and Council on behalf of the citizens of Magrath are very concerned with the increasing number of life threaten­ing situations that the police in Alberta are faced with. In view of this alarming fact, we respectfully urge your department to ser­iously reconsider any planned cutbacks in the RCMP forces serving in Alberta. These reduct­ions in manpower make it very difficult to carry out two-man patrols and officers patrolling alone face a far greater risk of bodily injury or even death. If the safety of our police is threatened then the safety of our residents is as well, and we do not want this province to become a place of fear. We fully realize that the economic situation today makes it imperative to reduce unnecessary costs, however we do feel that adequate police protection is an necessary cost. The predominant theme is Partners in Progress. It is an excellent time to renew the contribution of agriculture - our re­newable resource - to our province. It is a huge industry involving the production of food on 50 million acres of land in Alberta. It also involves the processing, packaging and distribution of the wide variety of foods produced. Think about it - one out of every three Albertans is involved in some aspect of the industry which boasts a five-fold multiples effect. It is the backbone of our economy. Farmers and ranchers meet a good portion of our food needs. It is estimated that 50% of all products consumed by Albertans were sourced in this province. Programs like Rural Agricultural Product Promo­tion (RAPP) make people familiar with the Better Buy Alberta logo and encourage them to buy Alberta Food Products. The Classroom Agriculture Program (CAP) helps promote agriculture in our schools. During this week keen, energetic volunteers, with inside knowledge of agriculture, will take the agriculture message into Grades 4,5 and 6 classrooms in an org­anized province-wide campaign. The theme is Partners. It will familiarize young Albertans with our number one renewable resource industry. It will focus on the student as a consumer and vital link in the agricultural food chain. The agriculture industry works hard to keep in tune with consumers' needs. During the week, be on the lookout for special features, displays or promotions which will give you an opportunity to learn more. Remember, if you eat, you are involved in this vital industry. MAGRATH LADIES ANNUAL CURLING CLUB BONSPEIL Magrath Ladies Curling Club held their Annual Bonspeil February 17th to 22nd with 24 rinks participating. The First Event - Arndt Motors sponsors of the trophy, was won by the Carol Tratch Rink with Arlene Reed, Laurie Hawkins and Deb Morgan all of Lethbridge. Second place went to the Janet Cullar 3rd 4th Rink of Warner; - Elsie Klassen Rink of Coaldale and - Diane Oertli foursome of Cardston. The Magrath Trading Company Second Event won by the Debbie Schneyder Rink with Men's Winter Boots styled with nylon uppers, velcro closing, cleated rubber soles. February 19th saw Magrath hoast Coaldale in League play with Coaldale' victorious by a 4- 3 score. Duke's team entered the Warner tournament on February 20 & 21st and came home with the tournament championship following three wins. Game #1 against Warner ended in a 5-3 score for Magrath. ATOM B: Magrath travelled to Picture Butte Saturday February 20th to play an exhibition game with Picture Butte Atom A No. 2 team. Magrath was defeated 16-7.
