SENIORS SUMMER GAMES The Senior Summer Games for Zone 1 were held recently in Medicine Hat. Lois Czech and Hazel Rasmussen, both of Magrath, entered selections into the Handcraft category. Both did very well. Lois got a Gold place with her quilt. Hazel received Silver for her embroidered pillow cases, a 3rd for her Baby quilt and 3rd for her Punch work table cloth. All the first and second place winners compete in the Provincials in Lethbridge beginning July 23. The Handcraft section of the Provincials will be held at Gilbert Patterson school. Lois will have her quilt entered there and Hazel will have her embroidered pillow cases there. The pasta can be bought here in the Trading Company. Acini Di Pepe Salad 1 cup sugar 2 Tbsp. Flour 2 beaten eggs 1 1/3 c. pineapple juice Cook till thick and bubbly. (I use juice from the canned fruit.) Cook 1/2 pkg. of Acini Di Pepe. Cool. Add cooked sauce. Add Fruit: 1 large can Fruit Cocktail, drained 2 cans Mandarine Oranges, drained 1 cup Pineapple, drained 1 cup each Red & Green Grapes 1 cup Coconut 1 cup Mini Marshmallows 1 cup Nuts (almonds slivered, opt) 1 large container of Cool Whip Mix well. Can be made night before. This is a very large salad. I cooked too much pasta so I used what I wanted and then froze the rest for use at another time. Pasta froze well. ; , Another great recipe which is quick & easy. Cornflake Maclntosh Drop Cookies 4 boxes Macintosh Toffee, broken up 4 Tbsp. Milk 2 Tbsp. Butter or Margarine ■ Put this in a heavy sauce pan and heat till toffee is melted. Then add: 4 cups Cornflakes Mix till coated. Drop by spoon full’ on wax paper till cool and enjoy. Bet you can’t stop at eating just one. These recipe’s have been tried and passed by the Trading Company ladies coffee group. Carol McCoy PRIORITIES j The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday mornings. Perhaps it’s the j quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it's the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable. A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the kitchen with the morning paper my hand. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned ■ into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. Let me tell you about it. I turned the volume up on my radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning talk show. I heard an older sounding chap with a golden voice. You know the kind, he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting business himself. He was talking about *a thousand marbles" to someone named “Tom". I was intrigued and sat down to listen to what he had to say. c ■> “Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you’re busy with your job. I'm sure ? they pay you well, but its a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have s to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet Too bad you missed your daughter’s dance recital." He continued, “Let me tell you something, Tom...something that has helped me keep a good perspective on my own priorities.” And that’s when he began to explain his theory of a “thousand marbles”. “You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average . person lives about 75 years. I know, some live more and some live ■ less, but on average, folks live about 75 years." “Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3900 which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now stick with me, Tom, I'm getting to the important part." t It took me until I was 55 years old to think about all this in any detail,"■ he went on, “and by that time I had lived through over 2800 Saturdays. I got to thinking that if I lived to be 75,1 only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy.“ “So I went to a toy store and bought j every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit 3 toy stores to round up 1000 marbles. I took them home and putthem inside of a large, dear plastic container right here in my workshop next to the , radio. Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and : thrown it away." “I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on the really important things in life. There is nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight.” ' “Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign-off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfest. This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure if I make it until next Saturday, then God has blessed me with a little extra time to be with my loved ones... “It was nice to talk to you Tom; I hope you spend more time with your loved ones, and I hope to meet you again someday. Have a good morning!” You could have heard a pin drop when he finished. Even the show’s moderator didn't have anything to say for a few moments. I guess he gave us ail a lot to think about. I had planned to do some work that morning, then go to the gym. Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. “C’mon honey, I’m taking you and the kids to breakfast.” “What brought this on?” she asked with a smile. “Oh, nothing special,” I said. “Its just been a long time since we spent a Saturday together with the kids. Hey, can we stop at a toy store while we’re out? I need to buy some marbles-* . The play presented by both sides was “Ali Cogia”, and written by Miss Barbara Lamb and Mr. Ted Clifton. The first drama presented was by Barbara Lamb and directed by Haroldine Sorenson. The characters were: Narrator-Barbara Lamb, Ali Cogia-Blain Hudson, Merchant-Lawrence Turner, Merchant’s Wife-Elinor Loose, Caliph Harun-Al-Rashid-Watson Ririe, Olive Merchants—Vona Domorestand Haroldine Sorenson, Boy : Matkin, I Doreen Perrett. J : ■ j This play had five scenes. Before the 1st act Marilyn may and Christy Miller sang “Fantasy”. Barbara , Lamb gave a piano solo “Falling Waters”. - I The next play by Ted Clifton was directed by Jerry Navratil. Characters were as follows: Narrator-Helen • Harker, Ali Cogia-Ken Cheeseworth, Merchant-Clarissa Gull, Merchant’s Wife-Doreen Harker, Caliph 1 Harun-Al-Rashid-Clifford Larson, Olive Merchants-Christy Miller and Ted Clifton, Wife’s Servants­' Katherine Bach and LaVern Harris. , This play had 4 scenes. Marilyn May tap danced and after Marilyn and Christy sang, “Yes My Darling I Daughter”. I • The judges for the plays were Mrs. Jezhell Merkley, Mrs. Allie Robinson and Mrs. Iola Harker. The play . j judged as the best was the last one. Both plays were very well performed but the second won by a slight margin , L because_of a little better stage managing and costuming.
