Robin Stanford A regular meeting Beef Club was held at Wocknitz April 13/77. called the meeting to led the club in the pledge. Winners of the Public Soeaking Competition held March 24th were: 1st - Robin Stanford and 2nd - Craig Stanford representing the Juniors; Colette Christensen and Kimberly Stanford representing the Seniors. Robin and Colette attended the district comp­etition in Cardston April 16th. Robin piaced first and will attend the Regional Competition at Claresholm April 30, 1977. Special thanks to our judges Mrs. Irene Ririe, Mrs. Doreen Alston and Mr. Bob West, BUSINESS: The Club will take part in a mass cleanup if ditches along our primary highway system scheduled for Saturday, May 7th. Church in Magrath from 2 to 4 in honor of their parents 40th Wedding Anniversary. Lyle and Iona are formerly of Ray-mond but now of Creston, B.C. They have five children and eleven grandchildren. No gifts by request. Neil Snow Forsyth passed away in Cardston Sunday, April 17ttu He would have been 98 years of age in August. Mr. Forsyth had lived in Magrath from 1906 to 1924. He went overseas with the Magrath soliders under Major Hugh B. Brown. He was the manager of Citizens Lumber Yard in Magrath for a number of years. Also served as a member of the Magrath School Board. His five oldest children were born in Magrath. He is survived by 6 sons including Duane Forsyth of Welling; 1 daughter; 2 sisters Florence Mercer, of Bountiful, Utah, Mary Evans of California; 31 grand­children, 42 great grandchildren. The oldest grandson Dr. Robert Forsyth will begin working with the Southern- Alberga Mental Health Office in Leth­bridge June lst/77 as Senior Psychologist. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 20/77 in Cardston's South Hill L.D.S. Chapel. The Ladies Hospital Auxiliary will hold its annual Florence Nightengale Tea, Bake Sale and Quilt Raffle in the Lions Hall, Saturday, May 7th/77 from 2 to 5 P.M. Bennett passed away in Raymond April 16/77 at the age of 81 years. Born in Mount Pleasant, Utah, she came to Southern Alberta in 1898. After her marriage to Victor Bennett they lived in Southern Alberta at Cardston, Raymond and Magrath and in 1939 moved to Edmonton where they resided until moving to Raymond in 1972. She is survived by eight sons and four daughters Theron, Mrs. Harry (Golda) Kincade, Reid G., Mrs. Deane (Zina) Jensen all of Edmonton Mrs. Doug (Melba) Warren of Comox, B.C. Harold of Raymond, Donald E. and Douglas G. of Vancouver, B.C., Garth of Calgary, Keith of Toronto, Mrs. Roland (Vernice) Rhees of Rexburg, Idaho and Bruce of Kitimat, B.C.; 37 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren; one brother Arthur Garner and one sister Zina Anderson both of Raymond. She was predeceased by her husband in 1972. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April Zu/t i in the Raymond 3rd Ward L.D.S. Chapel with Bishop Donald Steed officiating. I95 The first social event to be held in the newly renovated Senior Citizens’ Drop In Centre took place Wednesday evening, April 13th when a Social evening honoring two recently married couples Mr. and Mrs. George Dudley (nee Lillian Taylor) who just returned from a wedding trip to Israel, and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Gibb (nee Elaine Meeks) who were married Tuesday, April 12th was enjoyed. A delicious luncheon featuring fried chicken was enjoyed by Mr. and Mrs. .Dudley, Mr. and Mrs. Gibb, Mr. and Mrs. Garth Coleman, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Norton, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Harker, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Holladay, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Blumell, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Harris, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ackroyd, Mrs. Edna Thomson and Mrs. Jill Harker. Mrs. Garth Coleman was in charge of the arrangements and was assisted by several of the ladies. Ray Harker was Master of Ceremonies for the evening with those present part­icipating in games, community singing. A gift was presented to each of the happy couples from their friends. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Boucher entertained Saturday evening in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Hamilton who are leaving shortly on a mission to Lansing, Michigan. It is not a problem this government, or any government, can solve - only society can do that. The prob­lem I am concerned about is'the breakdown of the family unit here in Alberta. , The Government is responsible for the results of this breakdown, and since I have come to Edm­onton, I have seen a dramatic increase in public assistance to single parent families. Here are the figures: In 1972 we spent $52,700,000 on this item; in 1976 we spent $68,600,000 and in 1977 we expect to spend $83,400,000. Most of these single parents are female, something like 992. There are 14,021 single parents and they receive an average of $4,600 per year. 7.42 were under 20 years old; 20.72 were between 20-24 years; 35.52 were between 25 and 34 years; 21.52 were between 35 and 44 years and 14.92 were over 45 years. The marital status of these people is as follows: 19.22 were never married; 6.32 were widowed; 15.62 were divorced and 58.72 were separated. Now the point I want to underline is this: 74.32 of these single parent families is the result of marriage failure . As I stated at the beginning, this is a problem the government can't solve, and society must, in every way possible, stress the importance of the family unit.
