We would like to give special thanks to Arlene Helgeson for preparing the archival materials to be put on display in the arena, which everyone really enjoyed. Thanks to the Fletcher's (Dennis and Grace) for being our guests of honor on the float and for the donations of artifacts which triggered alot of memories. Thanks to Grant Stevenson for preparing the stand and harnesses and for the safe which were highlights of the displays. Thanks to the Harker Family Association for the beautiful cabinet and artifacts. And thank you to Tina Crowder for the stained glass window hanging and congratulations to the winner from Calgary. Call the Museum at 758-6618. ***** The United Nations General Assembly has declared 1999 the International Year of the Older Persons, the purpose of the year is to foster awareness of the importance of seniors' roles in society. We would like to help the community be more aware of the seniors living at the Terrace. We will be featuring two of our residents weekly, so that you may become better acquainted with them. This week we salute Amelia Niznikowski was born in Crystinapol, Poland. She moved to Alberta in 1949, & lived on a farm outside Magrath. Shed moved to the Diamond Willow Terrace 2 years years. Amelia (or Gramma as know by all residents & staff) was married for 66 years. She had 4 children: Rose, Stephanie, Walter & Bill. Amelia is a wonderful lady, blessed with many talents. She loved to garden, read, did alot of canning & cooking. She was well know for her bread & cabbage rolls. Gramma is a great lady, loved by all at the Terrace. If you ever need a hug, Gramma is always there with open arms. Joseph Critchfield was born in Magrath, Joe's family was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints by John Taylor. Joe's father was a carpenter & Joe followed in his trade. His father held the office of a High Priest for over 83 years. He did when he was 109 years of age. Joe had 6 brothers & 6 sisters. Joe was married on October 5th, 1949 in the Alberta, Temple. He served a mission in Toronto Canada. Joe loves to sing & memorize poetry. Joe told me he also loves to eat. (don't we all). Joe is a real asset to the Terrace. He is always smiling & never gets dicouraged. He leaves to mourn his wife Joyce Holladay Harris, his children: Gloria Jean (Robert) Whitehead, Marilyn ( Robert) Henderson, Wayne (Cynthia) Harris, Ber (Tom) Biddlecombe & step children: Patty(Ken) Perry, Brett (Mandel) Holladay, John(Kerriann) Holladay & James (Carol) Holladay. Carlos is survived by his sisters: Edythe Howard, Edna Mae Brown and Laverne Foote. Funeral Services were held Friday July 23rd with interment in the Magrath Cemetery. ****** Irwin Wilbert Gemmell passed away Wednesday July 21, 199 at the oage of 85 years. He leaved to mourn bis wife Nellie and five sons: Donald(Jean), Glen(Janet, Ken, Blaine(Debbie) & Melvin. ****** We want to thank anyone who helped in any way with the passing of our dear mother. To anyone who brought food, sent cards or helped with the lovely meal after the funeral, especially she wants to thank the nurses & all those who have cared for her for so long & for all the tender loving care you have given her. The stage this year hosted many local talent from Magrath and former residents. Located beside the school & pool area where most of the events were being held for the afternoon. People could enjoy the events while their children were enjoying the fair & the races. To kick off the event the former "Suitcase Louie and Friends" played to a real crowd of truly big fans from former years. They played songs like "Smoke on the Water" which seemed to be a crowd pleaser. "The Next Generation" which played in conjunction with the former band were their sons & their love for Band music has really rubbed off. Singing, musical theatre, playing the piano are only a few of the superb talents of the Ragan Brothers, Aaron, Shawn and Jason. Their mother Sharon Ragan accompanies them on piano & shared with us her beautiful vibes. Nathan Wolsey sang a few country hits of Garth Brook's romantic favorites like "Can You Feel My Love." The Magrath Cloggers in costume were really crowd pleasers. Bonnie Wilde, Melissa Schneyder, Lauren Balderson & Mandy Harris. Then in celebration to their safe return the cloggers Jennifer Sabey, Lauren Wilde, Mandy Sabey, Courtney Alston & Maren Alston clogged a new routine dressed in all their accident leg braces, arm braces & bandages. Singing up a storm were the wonderful duet Leanne Sabey & Audra Foggin, their upbeat country music was truly entertaining. Camilla Hill shared with us her love of singing with a little musical theatre from Anne of Green Gables, all dressed up like Anne herself singing "I Don't Want To Be Anybody But Me." Kelly Hatch's magic was a delight to the audience. With audience participation & laughter we were so entertained. Magic looks easy but as we found out it isn't as easy as it looks. Perry Kenney on vocal & guitar with Mr. Weasel Bear playing bass shared with us some favourite George Strait country hits. TJ Lybbert sang with Arlen Bennett playing the guitar, an original song she has composed. Then she played for us some beautiful pieces on the piano. Highland Dancing was a real treat for us by 4 young ladies from our community: Lauren Balderson, Allison Holt, Cindy Regher & Vicky Chatwin. Mardie Wolsey who was visiting from Vancouver was asked to fill in because of a cancellation & he sang some great songs from the past like "Moon River." Dance Mania Cloggers Cheriess Hudson, Paige Hudson, Amy Johnson, & Noelle Wolsey shared some great stomping to disco, country & pop music. Greg Davies and Randy Marsden former band players, played a song in dedication to their former band member called "Tears from Heaven". Scott Wolsey ended the show by singing two country favorites. Three solid hours of entertainment of local talent seemed to slip by quickly for listeners. Just one of the great events held to commemorate the Centennial in our great Town. Victim Services Association Dear People oi Il is sad and disheartening to write this letter, but 1 feel there needs to be a greater awareness of events that have occurred over the past months. A group of young people have chosen to stalk and victimize several residents of the Lodge, and perhaps other town residents as well. It is an appalling reflection on today’s society when our seniors cannot feel safe and secure in their environment. During the past year purses, wallets, money, treats, and other items have been stolen from some rooms at the Lodge. What are the answers? I know we live in challenging times. Perhaps though, if we stop emphasizing the “R” word 'rights’ and place greater emphasis on the “R” word RESPONSIBILITY we might expect to have more ACCOUNTABILITY where it counts. The staff of the Lodge and the R.C.M.P. have been very caring and supportive through out this matter. !
