MAGRATH SCHOOL FESTIVAL This year for the first time, the Magrath School and P.T.A. are sponsor­ing the Magrath School Festival. It is for all students from Grades 1-12 who wish to enter amateur school vocal solos or Amateur speech. If you do not have a speech or vocal teacher, you are eligible to enter. Saturday January 27th Magrath Atom B travelled to Warner for a league game and came home with a win. Despite the coldness of the rink, the game was quite heated both in the stands and on the ice. Magrath led 6-0 at the end of the first period, 9-2 at the end of the second and when final buzzer sounded it was 13-3 for Magrath. The defense did quite a job of keeping the puck out of dur end, only allowing a total of 11 shots at Greg Bourne. TADPOLES: On Saturday January 27th the two Tadpole teams joined forces to play against their Lethbridge opponents. The nine play­ers were first year or six year olds. Chalking up oints were Denver Wetherelt 2-1; Bryan Bullock 3-0; Chris Chatwin 2-0? Peter Lee 1-1; Cody Ririe 1-1; Ryan Nishikawa 0-1; Dusty Mandell 0-1 and a mystery goal to #4 but not on the team sheet so whoever you are thanks. Goaltending duties were split between Bryan Bullock and Denver Wetherelt. Final score-. 10-2 for Magrath. A Sunday team of Tadpoles put together a team to callenge a Lethbridge team at the Civic Centre January 28th, winning 9-3. The ref. being stripeless and whistleless had his hands full deciphering who made what goal, who assisted and no off sides. The kids had a great time. Lois Bluirell and Norma Arnold were in charge of making the queen size quilt to be raffled at Florence Nightingale Tea in May. The quilt was quilted by seniors at the Seniors’ Drop In Centre. Baby trophy for the first baby born this year was presented to Mr. & Mrs. Todd Ojala on the birth of a son bom Jan. 1/89. In February Heart & Stroke Foundation Canvas was held with Auxiliary President Shirlie Paul and Esther Toomer in charge. Canvas netted $2,499.10. Pins and awards were given to Aux.il- . ians May 11th by Hospital Administrator Stuart Norton. These were given according to the years of volunteer services. The Florence Nightingale Tea & Bake Sale, held May 13th, was successful nett­ing $1,864.00 which included the quilt raffle. Thanks to all who supported us in this endeavour. We helped with the Blood Donor Clinic September 26th at the Raymond High School.. we are proud of our Hutterian friends for their support. This year six of our members, Shirlie Paul, Esther Toomer, Louise Dow, Irene Ririe, Arlene Bennett and Beth Toomer, worked on the floor helping with donors while all members were asked to donate cookies and squares. Next year we will be responsible to serve the refreshments. Our Auxiliary shared lunch expense with Raymond - $25.00. At our September meeting, Mrs. Judy (Leishman) Greeno, Physiotherapist, from Lethbridge, gave a most interesting talk on Physiotherapy pertaining to Arthritis. . Chartered Accountant Ron Johnson spoke to the ladies on Incom & Financial benefits as it applies to this group. ( Volunteer hours for the year were 2,580. We are sharing the cost with the Hospital Board to have the Pediatric windows painted 4 tines per year, $70 - dur share. Members and friends knit and donated yam for toques for newborn babies. . Tray favors made each month of the year for the patients as well as regular visiting of patients each week. We hand out goodies from our Tuck Cart each visit. $500 was given Magrath Ambulance for Walkie Talkies. . Esther Toomer, our First Vice Pres­ident, attended the Convention in Edmon­ton November 28th, 29th, 30th, 1989. Jennifer Cook, nursing student at B.Y.U. was given a scholarship for $100 towards her studies in nursing. A $1,500 cheque was given to the hosp­ital towards the purchase of a $5,500 mini­pulse onimeter to be used on the floor. . Our Christmas Potluck Dimer Meeting was held at the home of Mary Baker. After dinner, Stuart Norton, our Hospital Administrator, presented each member present with a hospital spoon and also thanked everyone for their' help. SENIORS NEWS On Friday, January 26th, 1990, the Annual Meeting of the Garden City Seniors was held after the delightful Pot Luck roast beef dinner. Reports were given by the various committees. At this meeting a new slate of officers was ejected as follows: President - Glen Passey; Vice President - Doug Harker; Sec­retary - Margaret Leishman; Treasurer - Bernice Coleman; Past President - Joyce Holladay. Board Members-: Frosty Balderson, Earl (Bud) Wocknitz, Wallace Baker, Mildred Harker, Frances Blumell and Alma Whitt. This new Board is ready to serve you for the next two years. With your support this should be an enjoyable time. The former Board would like to thank all who supported them so well in the building of our new Seniors Centre during the past two years. PLEASE NOTE: Bookings for the building can still be made through Joyce Holladay, Phone 758-6484. ' •' Registrations for the first Magrath Music and Speech Festival are going very well. Sane parents who indicated they wished their children to participate may still enter. The registration deadline was January 30th. The late entry fee is $3.50 - please send checks payable to the Magrath Festival (late entries cause a lot of rescheduling and bookwork, so please do it right away if you plan to enter). We are hoping that this will be a very positive growing experience for all children who enter. We plan to present a medallion to the winners in each category and have certificates for all entrants. We have hired two excellent adjudicators. Entries should cover adjudicator expenses and ind­ividual and business donations will be sought to cover the cost of medallions when our costs are calculated. MINOR HOCKEY NEWS Our Magrath teams are doing well in league standings. Atom B (Lance Harker) is tied for 1st place out of 9 teams. Atom A (Duke Wetherelt) is tied for 1st place out of 6 teams. PeeWee B (Rod Brandham) is tied for 2nd out of 8 teams. PeeWee A (Marc Heggie) is way out front in first place out of 6 teams. Our Tad­poles (Rod Ririe & Wade Nishikawa) and our Novices (Don Ripley) are also doing exceptionally well in their games and tournaments. We can be very proud of all the players and parents involved with our association. We would also like to extend a big thank you to everyone who supports our concession, 50/50, raffles and comes out to watch our teams. The boys played some great hockey and were the only team to win all 5 games they played.
