Leeworrthy was the scene of a pleasing event on Thursday, June 26th, when thirty friends gathered to meet Mrs. Leeworthy's father, Mr. K. Scherba, of Vernon, B,C, and his travelling companion, Captain H. 0* Coombes of Vernon. Mr. Sch­erba is well known as a successful orchard-ist in the famous Coldstream Valley (Okan­agan Valley) and Captain Coombes is a vet­eran of twenty-four years service in the ./ Imperial Forces. A most pleasant evening * was spent, the highlight being a surprise presentation to the visitors, featuring a beautifully iced cake made by Mrs. Leeworthy and gifts from the hostess and Mrs. Pauline Leong who is also a daughter of Mr. Scherba. Mrs, Vouse of Portland, Oregon has been visiting at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Geo. Ovard............. Out-of-town guests included Eldridge Howes, nephew of Mrs. George Gurney, his wife, and their friends, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Bowman, all of Idaho Falls. It has been about thirty-two years since Mr. Howes has been in Magrath. A pleasant time was had and strawberries were served for lunch,.... His foreman, Whit Parkiason slipped on the weights. Sixteen were under 190 lbs. so were sold as feeders for 16^0 a lb. The others graded 4A-, 4 BI, 4 B2, and 2 C. There was only 200 per hog difference between the feeders and the 14 rail graded, Therezis something rotten in Denmark. Z Thursday July 10th the McIntyre Ranch shipped six cars of fat cattle, to Swift Canadian Co., Four of cows and two of bulls. Said William "It is surprising what green grass will do after such a y tough winter.” Miss Phoebe McIntyre and two girl friends, on the Ranch's best cow horses, helped In the early morning hours. It was a hot day for driving fat cattle.. A week has passed and still no rain. All we need now is the §25008.00, Mayor E. P, Tanner and an able group of canvass' ers are out to raise it. In the past §25000,00 was a small sum for the Mayor, It is now up to the committee and the / good people of the district if the Woollen Mill is to stay put, Succdss to them. The Hon. N. E. Tanner is doing his bit. None will deny. It is a worthy cause and everyone should lend a helping hand. This is no time to be asking what the interest rates are. Russel broke up the Baker homestead in 1909, after three or four dry ones in a row Russel quit the flat. Later Ross came up. Their father took over in between for a few years. Those were the days of sowing but of little reaping. The Bakers had to depend on crddit from their home town Bank in the Middle States. The Magrath Banks refused to loan money beyond a line two miles north of the Railroad Tracks. It is a long story from 1910 to 1947. / Thursday R. J. and family were riding in au new Oldsmobile, driven overland from Windsor, Ontario. Fluid drive. No gear shift. The brake stops the car but the motor continues to run. Your foot on the gas changes the speed from low to high, etc. etc. Beside'S the big car the Bakers now have wheat in their bins and money in the Bank, Monday evening a large mass meeting was held at the Assembly Hall to discuss the Woollen Mill situation. Max Sabey acted as chairman, with Hon. N, E. Tanner as speaker. Questions and answers aplenty* Hr, Tanner reported that if the money was forth coming for additional capital the government pre­ferred that the plant stay in Magrath. Mr. Tanner was booked to open the Stampede at Cardston on Wednesday, Mr. C. S. Matkin, Scout Commissioner, took 30 boys to Salt Lake City to attend the Centennial. Those from Magrath were Burns Sabey, Allen Anderson, Roger Bennett, Ron and Roger Ririe. There will be 55 Scouts from the Taylor Stake in attendance. Mr. & Mrs. Harry Wyman are the parents of a daughter, born July 8th at Sedro Woolley, Wash,..... Miss Elaine Dow left Wednesday for Provo where she will attend school. Mr. & Mrs. z B. W. Regular Meeting ions Club convened in the Assembly Hall on Tuesday evening, July 15th with President Jay A. Hamilton in the chair and about twenty members present. Mrs. J. T. Steele served a delicious cold lunch with ice Cre&mi A grant of $25.00 to the Boy Scout Council of Alberta to assist in the payment of the expenses of sending a Scout to the World Jamboree to be held near Paris France this summer. A Raymond scout will probably be the choice. It was decided to hold one more meeting in July to take the form of an outing at the Pool and dis­continue holding meetings until October 1st. A motion was carried to donate the sum of- $25.00 to the Band and that the Club co­operate with the band master and the band manager to the fullest extent. Secretary* instructed to write the War Assets Corpor­ation for full information re the possibil­ity of procuring a number of band instrum­ents from that Corporation. A motion was passed favoring the Club sponsoring a float for the July 24th celebration and Lion Roy Sheridan was appointed to have charge of preparing the same. Lion George Hamilton reported ’that the Swimming Pool wad doing nicely almost $300.00 had been taken in to date for tickets.
