In the most recent Baldacci novel that I just finished reading, I came across the following line: "He passed the stone and arch-windowed St Mary's Church where he had worshiped as a young man." Nothing earth shattering in that, is there? But the part that caught my attention was "where he had worshiped." Many of us 'go to church' like it is something we have been told to do...or else. Others 'attend services.' OK, I am here, I've done my part. That is all that is required of me. But how many of us show up at church on Sunday prepared to worship God in His House? Some arrive at the church and think, "OK, I've done my part. I am here. Now entertain me." Some arrive at church and think, "Oh, boy. Now is a good chance to catch up on the latest gossip. How much longer is this service going to last? I want to get to the coffee hour." Now there is quite a difference in attitude. And none of these have anything to do with the worship of our God. Sunday is our chance to give thanks to an Almighty and Powerful God for the many gifts that He has showered upon us, beginning with the gift of life; to ourselves, our children and to their children. Wouldn't your world be a barren place without all the members of your family to bring warmth and happiness to you? And where did the gift of life come from? From the God you have come to worship. We worship God through our hymns of praise, from the thanksgiving prayers, through the prayers of the people, from the remembrance of His death and passion in the service of Holy Communion. If you receive some instruction and comfort from the preaching, some insight from the readings of Holy Scripture, that is all good. But your duty is to worship the Almighty God: The Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. So next Sunday, remember that you have come to church to worship. And do so with all your mind and body. The Archives has once again applied for an Access to Holdings grant to continue with our Archives project. We should know the results of our application by the end of March and if successful, more information will fol­low. Our Annual Library Report for 2016 has been sent into the Provincial Libraries Branch. There are always a few interesting statistics that come from that report: -we continue to lend 3 times as many books as we borrow indicating that we have a relevant collection. 3428-1069 -we spent over 200 hours (or 28.5 days) just answer­ing reference questions, -our checkouts and renew­als were basically the same as last year - 3650. -we had 1342 wifi sessions -Interlibrary loans we ordered from Alberta outside of Chi­nook Arch - 4 compared to 105 we lent. We ordered 1 from another province com­pared to 11 we lent. We or­dered 1 from another country but lent 0. -about 10% of the population of Chinook Arch reads or lis­tens to books on-line. Usage was 146,000 compared to 116,500 last year. Doesn’t it seem more and more that physicians are running their practices like an assembly line? Bubba walked into a doctor’s office and the receptionist asked him what he had. Bubba said, “Shingles.” • One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on a parrot. He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bid­ding. He kept on bidding, but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher. Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid - the parrot was his at last! Where do you want me to unload ’em.” Real (not alternative) fact about irradiated ground beef: As so many of you know, our lives are now a test. Every day we hear "facts" - some of them spoken, some printed, and some on screen. We have to judge which are real, and which are "alternative", lies & falsehoods spouted by those with an actual agenda, and/or ignorant statements by those who know nothing of the subject. In Vulcan county many know just about everything there is to know about raising world class quality beef, so I would never question them about their profession - indeed their livelihoods, and the ability to support their families, is based on knowing what is true - a fact - about cattle. So I hope that those same people would look to folks who have the same type of knowledge about radiation to get facts about irradiated ground beef. I make my living building certified safety courses for oil companies, including Husky, Royal Dutch Shell, ARC, and many juniors. My most recent course on Radiation Safety was fully certified (NO technical errors) by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. So, how dangerous is irradiated ground beef? I think the best way to put it is... If you put a package of irradiated ground beef on the counter at home, there is FAR MORE radiation coming off the granite countertop than there is from the ground beef. That is a FACT. Gutenberg A collector of rare books ran into an acquaintance... ... who told him he had just thrown away an old Bible that he found in a dusty, old box. He happened to mention that Guten- somebody- or-other had printed it. "Not Gutenberg?" gasped the collector. "Yes, that was it!" "You idiot! You've thrown away one of the first books ever printed. A copy recently sold at auction for half a million dol­lars!" "Oh, I don't think this book would have been worth anything close to that much," replied the man. "It was scribbled all over in the margins by some clown named Martin Luther." The Captain Once upon a time there was a famous sea captain. This captain was very successful at what he did; for years he guided merchant ships all over the world. Never did stormy seas or pirates get the best of him. He was admired by his crew and fellow captains. However, there was one thing different about this captain. Every morning he went through a strange ritual.
