Box 87 Vulcan, Alberta, CanadaVILLAGE OF MILO The regular meeting of the Village of Milo was held on Wednesday, February 12, 1992 at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Office. Present were Mayor Phillips, Councillor Gary Middlestead and Muncipal Administrator Lynda Cyr. The minutes of the meeting held on January 12, 1992 were read. Mayor Phillips moved the adoption of these minufes. CARRIED. By-Law #294 was presented to Council for reading. The By-Law authorizes the municipal Council of the Village of Milo to enter into agreements with her Majesty the Queen in the right of Alberta (represented by the Minister of the Environment.) Councillor Middlestead moved first reading. CARRIED. Mayor Phillips moved second reading. CARRIED. Councillor Middlestead moved the By-Law be given a third and final reading at this meeting. CARRIED UNANIMOUS. Mayor Phillips moved third reading of By-Law #294. CARRIED. A certified true copy of this by-law along with both signed, original Land Use agreements are to be sent to Alberta Environment. Councillor Middlestead reported to Council on a Waste Management meeting held in Vulcan on February 11, 1992. A letter was received from Mr. and Mrs. Rocker, who have purchased the W. Milliken property. They wish to develop this property and have written to Council to see if there would be any problems. Council discussed this and decided the letter should be forwarded to Alberta Labour and John Guenther in Lethbridge. Councillor Middlestead stated he had contacted the insurance adjuster after last month's meeting, and there are no problems in regards to the Proof of Loss form or payment. Council had read the Land Use Strategy and were satisfied with the contents. A letter of thanks is to be sent to Mr. Darryl Angle for hauling the garbage last month. Mrs. Lola Findlay wrote to Council saying transactions are underway for the transfer of the title of her property to the Village. Mayor Phillips declared an interest in the following account with L.H. Phillips and Sons Ltd. of $ 20.59 and refrained from voting and discussion thereon. The machine holds portion-packed and frozen pizza, chicken and french fries. A microwave defrosts and thaws the food before hot air jets blast the exterior to give it crispness. The sixty second process is called “impingement". Food Business in its January 6, 1992 issue notes that Automated Vending of America has devised a computer-controlled vending machine that dispenses chilled, pre-peeled oranges and grapefruit. Vending of these products, which are peeled before they go into the machine, was made possible as a result of an efficient, high-tech peeling process that was developed by the Sunkist Citrus Growers’ Co-operative. The fruits are peeled after having been bathed in a solution of water and pectinase, which is a naturally occurring enzyme common in the peel of all citrus fruit. The fruit has a shelf-life of 21 days within the vending machine, one of which is currently being used in a downtown Los Angeles YMCA. Finally, PDR Notes. September 1985, noted that Golden Key Vendors of Des Moines, Iowa, was selling worms, leeches, grubs and slippery livers in converted sandwich-vending machines. The "Vend-A-Bait" machines were selling bait to fishermen in 18 states. Tom Bateman To most nine year olds, their 14 year old brother is a role model to emulate in an attitude of hero worship. My older brother Jin was in my view, an extraordinary philosopher as well as being an athlete, a superb- shot, a disciplinarian, and an-ail round completely capable and dependable individual. I eventually learned the truth but it took a few years. Jim had been assigned the task by our mother of negotiating a deal with the guest of honor for Christmas dinner, 1947. In more precise terms, my mother sent him out to kill the turkey. Our family were blue bloods in our commun­ity. We were well established on our farm, and could trace our ancestors back 15 years or more, right to homestead days. We were so attached to homestead traditions that we still lived in the original clapboard house and used the original outhouse. My parents, three sisters and two brothers, were the Bateman family, with virtually no other claim to fame. Our purpose in life was to survive and so far we had. Our little farm was fairly typical in that all community residents hovered right around the poverty level — usually just below. Our existence was spartan during the good times and hardly bearable during most of the years. Our diet was very basic. We ate whatever we could grow, catch or shoot. All family members had to contribute. The contribution I preferred to make to the family's welfare program was by hunting, fishing and trapping. It was the manly thing to do. The fish, furbearers and the huntable species won most of the contests. In those days, there were raore ducks but far less geese than we have now. I used to chase the same 10 geese all fall and hardly ever got close enough to make any impact. I did help to educate them however, so that nobody else got close either. All this brings us back to Roger. He was a large turkey - of the bird variety. Referring to people as turkeys was not yet fashionable. Roger was my nemesis. He hated me and contributed in a major way to my inferiority complex. Psychology hadn't been invented yet so we worked out our own problems or lived with them. Roger was a mean sucker, lie was "Attilla" the turkey. There was no obstacle too great for him to tackle if it meant he could get a bite of me. I experienced his feet, spurs, wings and beak in all the variety of offensive sequences he had worked out. It took two decades for me to become convinced that turkeys don't have teeth. All the unkind and unattractive attributes of turkeyhood were packaged in Roger. Whenever he caught me in an open area, he would sneer and show his teeth, and drag his wings on the ground to sharpen them. He was a cruel one. His existence motivated me to diligence in practising my stalking. I could belly crawl across the sheep pasture without Roger seeing me. I learned to move from building to building, and from the culti­vator to the mower with stealth and precision. Sometimes, he ambushed me and I would hear his maniacal gobble just before he exacted his punishment with wings, teeth and spurs. Oh how I dreamed of his demise. Roger occupied my mind every waking moment and I dreamed about him. I invented clever plans to kill him. I became a reasonable shot with my .22 rifle because every can, bottle, gopher or whatever became Roger. There were other turkeys on our farm and it seemed too good to be true to me to hear that Roger had been selected for Christmas dinner. My older brother, Jim, knew that Roger hated me. In retrospect, I believe Jim probably trained Roger in some of his more complex guerilla tactics. Jim was not happy that Roger was our chosen bird. He would never again have such an eager student. The method of execution involved a .22 rifle and was otherwise completely unimagin­ative. Jim was the appointed executioner and I demanded my right to observer status. I even offered suggestions about how to make the execution more sensational but Jim was troubled and was not tolerant of my excitement.
