I read an article last year that referred to a book, December by Eve Bunting. I had the library order it in for me, but then needed to have a copy for myself. The book tells the story of a little boy and his mother as they spend Christmas Eve in a cardboard box on the streets, huddled together under an old coat to keep warm. They have a tree, a discard from the tree lot, decorated with some treasures, and two Christmas cookies that they are saving for Christmas day. On the wall of their house is a picture of an Angel (taken from the December page of a calendar, hence the name of the book). Just as the little boy is going to sleep, dreaming of how that cookie will taste tomorrow, there is a knock at the ‘door’ - a piece of wood covering the opening to their cardboard hut. An old woman is standing their seeking shelter from the cold. They invite her in to share what they have. The mother gives the old lady their coat to keep her warm. Although he hesitates, the boy offers the plate of Christmas cookies, and the woman takes one, smiling in gratitude. When the boy wakes up next morning, the woman is gone and the coat is neatly folded on the floor. For the boy and his mother that night marked a transition. Over the coming months, his mother finds work, and by next Christmas they are celebrating in the warmth of their own apartment. If you remember the Bible story of the poor widow who put her two small coins in the collection, all that she had, Jesus said that her offering was worth more than all the rest in the collection. The rest had given from their abundance, the widow had given from her poverty. It can be tempting to think that giving our money or time or talents is about giving from our surplus. It is easy to give what we don't need. We give money to churches or the many other charitable organizations, and that all makes a difference. But Jesus does not call us to a life that is easy. Jesus holds up the poor widow as an example of what it means to be truly generous. No doubt the little boy noticed the next day that he no longer had a cookie all to himself. Jesus calls us to a life that is generous, generous like the boy in the story and like the widow. Jesus calls us to a life that is generous, not just in the impact it has on others, but in its impact on us as well. We don't hear what happens to the widow when she leaves the temple, but I like to think that her life turned around, just like in our story. They were generous and their life turned around. Perhaps something similar happened to the widow. The fundamental lesson of December is that Jesus calls us to live beyond our comfort zone. Following Him, is not meant to be easy. It is meant to be uncomfortable. In giving more of ourselves, more of our treasure than feels comfortable, we open up space for God to do a new thing. It is how we grow. It is how we learn. It is how we make room for God's love to fill our lives. This is always truly a communty event that wouldn’t happen without the help of community members who donate pies, help with the set-up (Lions Club), preparation, cooking, serving and clean-up. This year we had over 200 people in attendance, and hungry people they were. Almost 100 pounds of ham and all 26 pies disappeared. Thank you to Penny Heather for donating all the potatoes and to CPS (Crop Protection Services) - Milo for their donation to our supper. A confident driver avoids using them. 2. Under no circumstance should you maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, because the space will be filled in by someone else, putting you in an even more dangerous situation. 3. The faster you drive through a red light, the smaller chance you have of getting hit. 4. WARNING! Never come to a complete stop at a stop sign. No one expects it and it will result in your being rear-ended. 5. Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive bodywork, especially one with out of province plates. 6. Braking is to be done as hard and late as possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in, giving a vigorous foot massage as the brake pedal violently pulsates. 7. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right. It’s a good way to scare people entering the highway. 8. Speed limits are only a suggestion and are not enforceable during rush hour. 9. Just because you’re in the left lane and have no room to speed up or move over doesn’t mean that the driver flashing his high beams behind doesn’t think he can go faster in your spot. 10. Always brake and rubberneck when you see an accident or even someone changing a tire. This is seen as a sign of respect for the victim. 11. Leam to swerve abruptly. High speed slalom driving is vital to avoid pot-holes. 12. It is traditional to honk your hom at cars that don’t move the instant the light turns green. 13. Remember that the goal of every driver is to get there first by whatever means necessary. 14. “Flipping someone the bird” is considered a polite salute in most cities. This gesture should always be returned. 15. At least four more cars should proceed on a left after the light turns red. If you fail to do so, you will be rear-ended. 16. If someone cuts you off, you should return the gesture by speeding around them on the right, pulling in front of them and slamming on the brakes.
