A fanner’s son asked if he could walk home from the market instead of riding with his dad. The fanner was sure the boy would stop and see his girlfriend on the way, but said the boy had to carry the crate of chickens they had just bought, thinking that would keep the boy our of trouble. The boy was walking down the road, daydreaming of his girlfriend, when all of a sudden the crate slipped from his hands and broke open. Chickens scurried off in different directions, but the determined boy spent hours walking ail over the area, scooping up the wayward birds and returning them to the repaired crate. Hoping he had found them all, the boy reluctantly returned home, expecting the worst. “Dad, I’m sorry I’m late home, but the chickens got loose," the boy confessed sadly. "However, I looked everywhere, and managed to find all twelve of them." “Well, you did real good, son," the farmer beamed. "I bought seven." A husband and wife were driving though Queenstown on their way to visit some friends. They came to a muddy patch in the road and the car became bogged. After a few minutes of trying to get the car out by themselves, they saw a young farmer coming down the road, driving a very shiny John Deere tractor. The farmer stopped when he saw the couple in trouble and offered to pull the car out of the mud for *50. The husband accepted and minutes later the car was free. The farmer smiled as he counted his cash, and said to the husband “You know, you're the tenth car I've helped out of the mud today." The husband looks around at the fields incredulously and asks the farmer, "When do you have time to work your land? At night?” "No,” the young farmer replied seriously, "Night is when I haul the water to the hole in the road." A bus load of Alberta provincial politicians were driving down a country road one afternoon, when all of a sudden, the bus ran off the road and crashed into a tree in an old farmer’s field. Seeing what happened, the old farmer went over to investigate. He then proceeded to dig a hole and bury the politicians. A few days later, the local sheriff came out, saw the crashed bus, and asked the old farmer, "Were they all dead?" The old farmer replied, "Well, some of them said they weren't, but you know how them politicians lie." A guy from Calgary who had moved to Queenstown went to the local feed and livestock store and boasted to the proprietor about how he was going to take up chicken farming. He then asked to buy 1000 chicks. "That's a lot of chicks for a first time operation" commented the proprietor. “I mean business. Besides how hard can it be?" the arrogant young man replied. A week later the fellow from Queenstown was back again. "I need another 1000 chicks," he said. "Boy, you are serious about this chicken farming," the salesman told him. — “YeahT^e brandmew^chickerrfamTerreplied; “f just need to iron out a few problems." “Problems?" asked the salesman. "Yeah," replied the beginner, "I think I planted that last batch too close together." A newlywed farmer and his wife were visited by her mother from Milo, who immediately demanded an inspection of the place. The farmer had genuinely tried to be friendly to his new mother-in-law, hoping that it could be a friendly, non- antagonistic relationship. All to no avail though, as she kept nagging them at every opportunity, demanding changes, offering unwanted advice, and generally making life unbearable to the farmer and his new bride. While they were walking through the bam, during the forced inspection, the farmer's mule suddenly reared up and kicked the mother-in-law in the head, killing her instantly. It was a shock to all no matter their feelings toward her demanding ways. At the funeral service in Vulcan a few days later, the farmer stood near the casket and greeted folks as they walked by. The pastor noticed that whenever a woman would whisper something to the farmer, he would nod his head yes and say something. But when a man walked by and whispered to the farmer, he would shake his head no, and mumble a reply. Very curious as to this bizarre behavior, the pastor later asked the farmer what that was all about. The farmer replied, “The women would say, 'What a terrible tragedy' and I would nod my head and say, Yes, it was.'“ “But the men would each ask, 'Can I borrow that mule?' and I would shake my head and say, 'Can't help you. It's ail booked up for a year.”’ An aged farmer and his wife were sitting on their porch one evening when the old woman wistfully recalled that the next week would mark their golden wedding anniversary. “Let's have a big ribs and ham barbeque to celebrate Homer," she suggested. "You know, kill a pig and invite all our friends." The farmer scratched his grizzled head. The Silent Sermon A regular congregation member of a church had stopped showing up for weekly service. After a few weeks had passed, the minister decided to visit him. It was a chilly day and that evening, the minister found the man at home all alone, sitting by a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his minister's visit, the man welcomed him and led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace, then quietly waited for the minister to chide him for his absence. The minister made himself at home but said nothing. In the silence, the minister contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, he took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth alone, away from the rest of the flames. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent. The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember's flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The minister glanced at his watch and chose this time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow once more, with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. As the minister reached the door to leave, his host, with a tear running down his cheek, said,"Thank you for your fiery sermon. I shall be back in church next Sunday." If you are an ember trying to burn in the cold and darkness, come to church and reach your full potential, warmed by the flames of love in the congregation. We all want to go out in a blaze of glory. Well, actually it has been feeling more like summer lately, but we are not com­plaining, although it is a little hard to stay focused on work when the sun is shining outside. The first week in May was designated as Education Week by Alberta Education. We had many exciting events to celebrate the theme of “We Are Inspiring Education”. We began our celebration with a pancake breakfast cooked by the staff for all of the students. On Tuesday we had a family picnic during which fami­lies could join their children in school and share a pic­nic lunch in the gym. Students then took their families up to their classrooms to share their learning. Thanks to all of the families that joined us and to the families that took on extra members for that event. Wednes­day featured the whole school playing in a soccer game. Actually we had two games, one for the more competitive, like Mrs. Lahd and one for those who just like to run around. As a way of expressing our grati­tude to all those in the Milo and Siksika communities for their support, we held a Community Tea. This tea featured snacks made by the Grade 6-9 cooking option class served by some of the older students. Entertain­ment was provided by several students. We were treated to Native Dancing by Tegan, Makiya, Mary Jo and Cameron. Cameron Good Eagle also did an amazing energet­ic solo dance called the Grass Dance. I can see that Native Dancing requires a lot of stamina and energy. The grade 123 class sang a song and the grades 1-5 students did a little 70’s line dancing. It was great to see so many community members from both of our communities join us on that day. All in all Edu­cation Week was a very won­derful celebration of learning. The first of the Provincial Achievement Tests took place from May 12 to May 14. Our grade 3, 6, and 9 students wrote the writing part of the .anguage Arts test. The stu­dents really worked hard to Jo their best.MILO SCHOOL NEWS On June 12th at the School Council meeting it was announced by Ken Garinger, Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, that Jason Neville will be the new principal of Milo School. He will be principal of both Ar- rowwood School and Milo School which will provide many opportunities for collaboration between teachers. Jason attended the meeting and so was able to meet some of the members of School Council and provided some back­ground information on himself and the wealth of experi­ence he brings to the position. Grade 9 Grad was celebrated on Friday, May 23rd. This year we have four grade 9 students graduating. Grad was held in the school gym which was decorated by the grad students with help from Mrs. Lahd and a few other students. The theme was “Up”, so there were many balloons involved. A delicious turkey supper was provid­ed by the Milo School Council with a beautiful cake baked and decorated by Lorraine Kirk. Colleen Deitz, Palliser Regional Schools School Board Chairperson brought greetings and good wishes from the School Board. Dan Doerksen, the Low German Mennonite Liaison, spoke to the students and encouraged them to carry on with their education. G-Nel Nelson, vice-chairperson of the Milo School Council presented the students with grad hoodies. The evening concluded with a slide show sharing some of the students’ school experiences. The graduates had family and friends there and everyone seemed to enjoy the evening. Congratulations to Frank Giesbrecht, Judy Giesbrecht, Corny Unrau and David Unrau!
