Envelope with purple postage stamp marked “NEDERLAND 10 CENT” in top right corner, addressed to “Dem Herrn Kommandant.” Information Provided by Michael D. Bulmash: Amersfoort in the Netherlands was considered a Durchgangslager or Police transit camp. Prisoners were eventually to be sent on to major extermination centers such as Auschwitz, Sobibor, or Mauthausen. Conditions were as appalling as the worst of concentration camps. Prisoners could be Dutch or Belgian political prisoners, Soviet prisoners of war, or Jews.
