Cornelius Buhler was born on September 18, 1909 in Alexandrovka, Russia to parents Peter and Mary Buhler. The Buhler family later immigrated to Canada. Cornelius had two sisters, Helen and Katy. At time of enlistment, he was single and working as a truck driver in Lethbridge. On July 5, 1941, Cornelius Buhler enlisted for service in the Calgary Highlanders at Lethbridge. He received training in Canada, and arrived in the United Kingdom on December 23, 1941. Private Buhler spent the next two and half years serving with the Calgary Highlanders in the United Kingdom.
