Buhler, Cornelius Peter

Cornelius Buhler was born on September 18, 1909 in Alexandrovka, Russia to parents Peter and Mary Buhler. The Buhler family later immigrated to Canada. Cornelius had two sisters, Helen and Katy. At time of enlistment, he was single and working as a truck driver in Lethbridge. On July 5, 1941, Cornelius Buhler enlisted for service in the Calgary Highlanders at Lethbridge. He received training in Canada, and arrived in the United Kingdom on December 23, 1941. Private Buhler spent the next two and half years serving with the Calgary Highlanders in the United Kingdom. On July 6, 1944, he arrived in France and served in the Normandy region for the next three weeks. On July 25, 1944, the Calgary Highlanders were involved in combat operations at Verrierres Ridge. It was during this battle that Private Buhler was killed in action. He was buried in a temporary grave at St. Martin de Fontenay and later reinterred in Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery.
