Arnsdorf, Arthur Ernest

Arthur Arnsdorf was born on September 3, 1919 in Medicine Hat, Alberta to Reverend R.G. and Ida Arnsdorf. The Arnsdorf family later moved to Lethbridge where Arthur was raised with brothers, Hans, William, Werner and Walter and sisters, Gertrude and Esther. He was a graduate of Lethbridge Collegiate Institute and was employed as a clerk at the Robert Kitson Pharmacy in Lethbridge. On July 12, 1942, he married Miss Katherine Mihalik. On April 26, 1943, Arthur Arnsdorf enlisted for service in the Canadian Army at Calgary. For the next year, he received training in Calgary, Camrose and Barriefield, Ontario, and in January 1944 was qualified as a regimental signaller. On March 15, 1944, Private Arnsdorf arrived in the United Kingdom and was taken on strength by the Canadian Scottish Regiment. On June 9, 1944, he landed in France, joining other members of the Canadian Scottish who were involved in combat operations in Normandy. On July 8, 1944, Private Arnsdorf was reported as killed in action while serving in Normandy. He was laid to rest at Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery. For his wartime service, Private Arnsdorf was awarded the 1939-45 Star, France-Germany Star, War Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. His mother, Ida and wife, Katherine each received the Memorial Cross in his honour
