Fred MacBeth was born on September 19, 1892 in Lethbridge, N.W.T. to parents Hugh and Jeanette MacBeth. He grew up in Lethbridge with siblings Isabelle, Roderick, John, Gordon and Jessie. Fred completed his schooling in Lethbridge, and was a very popular young man, known to all in the community. As a hometown boy, his death in the Great War was keenly felt in the city. At time of enlistment, Fred had been employed as a civil engineer. On November 18, 1914, Fred MacBeth enlisted with the 31st Battalion CEF and was assigned the rank of Corporal.
