Moorhead, Henry

Henry Moorhead was born on November 11, 1892 in Longford, Ireland to parents William and Emily Moorhead. He grew up in Ireland with his brothers William, Alexander and George. As young men, the Moorhead boys immigrated to Canada and all settled in southern Alberta. Henry signed up and served with the RNWMP. When war broke out, Henry joined his three brothers in the recruiting lines. Alexander served with the 50th Battalion CEF Calgary, George served with the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles Pincher Creek, while William joined Henry in the 39th Battery CFA Lethbridge. Both Alexander and Henry Moorhead would lose their lives as a result of their war time service. On May 28, 1915, Henry Moorhead enlisted with the 39th Battery 10th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery and received the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Moorhead arrived in England on February 26, 1916, and remained in England until embarking for France on July 14, 1916. Upon arrival in France, he was taken on strength by the Lord Strathcona’s Horse. He served with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse for a little over two years, and saw action at the Somme, Cambrai and Amiens. Sergeant Moorhead was twice decorated for valor, receiving the Military Medal and Bar for acts of bravery in the field. On October 10, 1918, while serving near Montay, France, Sergeant Moorhead was killed in action. He was laid to rest at Montay-Neuvilly Road Cemetery. In addition to the Military Medal and Bar, Henry Moorhead was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. His mother, Emily received the Memorial Cross and death plaque in honour of her son
