Steven, William

William Steven was born on February 8, 1880 in Edinburgh, Scotland to parents William and Christina Steven. He was raised in Scotland with sister, Dora and brother, Archie. As a young man, William immigrated to Canada. He made his home in Lethbridge, Alberta where he was employed as a city clerk. On October 11, 1915, William Steven enlisted with the 39th Battery 10th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. Quartermaster Sergeant Steven arrived in England on March 13, 1916, and remained in England until embarking for France on July 13, 1916. He would serve at the front in France and Belgium with the 39th Battery for six months, before medical concerns would necessitate his return to England. On January 31, 1917, Quartermaster Sergeant Steven was returned to England and diagnosed with severe anemia. Having received blood transfusions, he recovered for a brief period, but soon fell gravely ill again. He would struggle with his condition for months, until on October 13, 1917, Quartermaster Sergeant Steven passed away. He was laid to rest at Shorncliffe Military Cemetery. William Steven was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. His brother, Archie received the death plaque and scroll in memory of William
