Frank Godsman was born on April 29, 1891 in Aberdeen, Scotland to parents Frances and Margaret Godsman. He grew up in Scotland with his siblings Arthur, Hilda, James and Osie. As a young man, Frank immigrated to Canada, making his home in Lethbridge, Alberta. He lived in Lethbridge for two years and worked as a bank clerk for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. On February 6, 1916, Frank Godsman enlisted with the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles. Pte Godsman was transferred to 137th Battalion CEF that same day. He arrived in England on August 30, 1916 aboard the SS Olympic. Pte Godsman was transferred to the 21st Reserve Battalion and then to the 50th Battalion CEF for service in France.
