George MacDuff was born on November 23, 1891 in Waverly, Nova Scotia to parents George and Elrid MacDuff. He grew up in Nova Scotia with his brother, Elrick. The MacDuff family moved west to Alberta, and made their home in Lethbridge. George was making his living as a car inspector at time of enlistment. On November 24, 1914, George MacDuff enlisted with the 20th Battery 5th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. Gunner MacDuff arrived in England in the spring of 1915, and remained in England until embarking for France on January 18, 1916.
