A little reflection would make him realize that huge sums of money have already been spent on school buildings and that further im­mense sums are being expended to keep these schools in operation. It is on behalf of the students who attend these schools that school taxes are collected and spent. The question then that comes to mind is this: Why is it that the state can spend huge sums each year to main­tain the pupils in High School while the boy or girl who leayes school must shift for himself or herself without further support from the public funds? On the face of it, it does not seem fair. It is true that all are en­couraged to continue school and the same opportunity is given to all, but particular conditions in the life of a boy or girl may and very often do render it impossible to take advantage of the opportunity. This is a large question which would merit consider­able thought and much more space than is at my dis­posal here. If a statesman were asked this question undoubtedly he would reply that the state must have leaders in the different departments of life, industrial and commercial, political, social, moral, religious. The favored ones are so favored, not for any par­tiality towards them, but for the betterment of the state at large which means for all citizens: in other words the boy or girl in the High School is educated to a great extent at the public expense in order that he or she may render a duty to the rest of the citizens. For no state has yet arrived at such an altruistic stage of development that it would be willing to educate men nd women if it knew that they were going to withdraw from the life of the country and confine themselves alone to the enjoyment of the benefits conferred on them. The intention of the state, in so far as the state reflects, and is conscious of its own intention, is that citizens are educated at public expense in order that they may make return in increased possibilities for the happiness of all. The point that I m trying to make is the thing incon­trovertible and yet, as you know, universally ignored. You graduates of 1953 are charity students. You have been educated by your neighbors. You are charity students just as much as if a man of wealth and means took you as boys and girls, sons and daughters of poor parents and provided for your education on condition that you make certain definite returns. If you make these returns the state will be repaid. You will have fulfilled your obligations. But if, through your own fault, you fail in this you will be guilty of embezzle­ment just as much as a crooked public official who steals from the public funds. As a body whether you know it or not, you are going to be an asset to your country, but if you do a little thinking on this, if you are conscious of your obligation of debt, and if you are, what I think you are, young men and young women of honor and conscience, you are going to accomplish far more than if you were ignorant of your debt. You begin now the practical application in everyday life of the things that you have been taught. And in this day and age of keen competition in the business world, where tactics of a questionable nature are often employed to outwit the competitor, your honesty and integrity will frequently be put to the test. In this battle of wits it is the man or woman of character that will win out in the end. You have received a Christian education, and Christian education spells character, and character is that quality in a person which prompts him to do the right thing at all times and in all places; in short to be true to God, to himself and to his fellow-man. JOSEPH'S "ANNALS" Page 5 EDITORIAL STAFF ddlitoziaC DOUG TOMPKINS Registration day on September 22nd, 1952, was much the same as any other fall day, except to the students who were to graduate. For them, it meant final examinations, and many long hours of study. But study is not by far the only aspect of school life. Extra-curricular activities, including social functions and sports, form an important balancing counterpart of school life to the student. The process of publishing a year book such as this can only be carried through to its ultimate success if each individual responsible for some phase of the work co-operates. Thus it is only fitting that I express, on behalf of the St. Joseph's Annals, my deepest appreciation to those who have contributed towards the publica­tion of this year book. I refer particularly to the business and professional men who are represented on these pages by advertisements and without whose co-operation this edition would not be possible. I would like at this time to move a vote of sincerest thanks to the teaching staff of St. Joseph's High School. Their understanding, patience, and special help will not easily be forgotten. And a simple but special "Thank You" to Mr. Sawicki, who acted as advisor for both the Students' Council and the Year Book Staff. To the Graduates, I wish the best of luck for the future. If we remember our Catholic training, then the future holds many bright prospects. And I hope when looking back over the St. Joseph's Annals of 1953 in years to come, it will provide you with all the fond memories experienced at St. Joseph's. Paqe 6 ST JOSEPH'S "ANNALS' President's Message RON MAKARENKO >W?fSllSSSJ5 After ten months of travelling down the "trail of golden dreams," we have at last come to a rude awakening. This is the end of the road. Turning back the hands of time, we recall that this year was to be so different from previous terms. The students started off in earnest but as the term progressed resolutions were either broken or completely forgotten. To the grade 12's this year was one of study and hard work. One goal loomed foremost in their minds, Graduation! Ahead of these people lies the task of making good in the new world which lies before them. God help them! To those who started high school, this was a year during which they adapted themselves to their new and arduous tasks. Finally to the grade nines, this was a year of new experiences, studies, and social events. Foremost in their minds, were undoubtedly the Departmentals. As far as social events are concerned this year was very successful. Once again after two years of female representation, a male president was elected. The students gave their wholehearted support to the functions put on by the council. They left nothing to be desired in the way in which they co-operated. Well done, students of St. Joseph's! At this point the students' council should step into the spotlight. They all worked hard trying to please the students with social events, competitions, and new school rings. Take a bow, students' council! A special bouquet is offered to Mr. Sawicki who, as staff supervisor, contributed his untiring efforts to these school functions and especially to the year book. To our teachers who have earned our everlasting gratitude, through their unsel­fish hours of teaching, we can but offer an earnest thanks. I hope that they will have reason to be proud of us after this term, and later, in our endeavors after we leave school. Our sincere thanks are extended to the priests of our parishes who have looked after our spiritual needs and who have shown such interest in our activities. Finally, I would like to extend my wholehearted thanks to the School Board who provided us with the many facilities, for both our educational and social programs. In closing, I wish all the graduates luck and success in their undertakings. I hope when they go out into the world, their Catholic training will be an example to many with whom they come in contact. May the good Lord bless us and keep us, and may St. Joseph, the patron Saint of our school, continue to guide us through the rest of our lives.ST. JOSEPH'S "ANNALS" Page 7 Valedictory EDWARD RICE 43f®flS5&0 This occasion symbolizes an important milestone in the lives of the boys and girls in this graduating class of 1953. For some of us it marks an end, for others it marks the mid-point of academic life. Here, for a brief space of time we have studied, worked and played together. As we stand for a moment at this turn in the road, over which we shall never pass again we pause to take one wistful, back­ward look at the familiar scenes which have constituted our little world during those happy, fleeting years we have spent together—the class rooms where the teachers have labored so faithfully and well to impart the knowledge we have acquired; school functions and socials where so many priceless friendships have been made; and the many other experiences that combine to make our school life a precious and memor­able thing. And now, like a story that is quickly told, it is finished. With a pang of regret and yet with a curious eagerness we turn our faces to the future; a future as uncertain and obscure as the uncharted seas into which Columbus launched his little fleet, 461 years ago. We leave the sanctuary of school life to enter a world torn asunder by hate and fear. To us is offered both a chal­lenge and an opportunity—a challengeto use our Intelligence and Catholic influences in a world which science has reduced to a neighborhood, to make that world one of brotherhood—and opportunity to serve, to promote knowledge, discretion and understanding, to guard the paths of justice and preserve the way of righteousness. Let us therefore take up the challenge and prove ourselves worthy of the honors conferred on us today, and worthy of the Catholic faith fostered in us by those whose sacrifices have made it possible for us to attain them. In whatever mold our future life may be cast, let us resolve to pursue our respective destinies with ihe high courage, calm determination and steadfast faith that will fortify us with the strength to do and will to dare, remembering always that he is greatest who best serves his fellow men. We have reached this goal not by ourselves alone but through the careful guid­ance of our teachers, who were always understanding, patient and willing to help us over our difficulties; to them we owe a great debt of gratitude and to them we give our very sincere thanks. To our parents, too, we say thank you. For their interest in us, for their never failing word of encouragement, and for the many little things that we usually take for granted. This is a proud moment for them as well as for us—because of them we have come this far, let us not fail them now. To you who follow us, we now hurl the torch. May you carry it high for the honor of St. Joseph's and remember always that to attain the goals of your life you must aim high. There is no easy road to success. These goals, you will find, may be reached much more easily if you, like us, go forward into the future ever keeping in mind our school motto, "With God as our Leader, and the Church as our Guide." LEROY LAVALLEY To be a ship's captain he first desired, But of this noble idea he soon tired, For the profession of medicine be admired Because of ambition, he'll never be mired. NELLIE MOSKALUK Eric, the reason Nellie we tease Through her school years has passed with ease, A shy smile tells she's easy to please, Her disposition sour, one never sees. CHARLIE LAZZAROTTO "Sharpy," "Liza" were but a few Of the names they called our "artist of the cue," In the fall a new cold wave will be due, To our boy who drives a Hillman blue. FRANK MRAZEK A very good student has been our Frank, For many rides we have him to thank, Questioned on occupation, our hearts sank, For we find he will end up in a bank. ANN LEVERICK As driver of two cars so fine, She'll probably miss them at the time, When St. Joe's school work will decline. And she'll later teach others cos and sine. MONA PATIENCE Mona's favorite man is Dale, Though daily she receives his mail, They meet on weekends without fail, And ride in his Prefect, slow as a snail. HELEN LEVERICK Her home from school is many a mile, And we all love her for her style Of chosen words, and pretty smile, For lots of fun, her phone you dial. STAN "CHUTS" PISKO During school hours, he doesn't do much, In ways of homework, study and such, But our guy Stan, better known as "Chuts," Is a good boy to know, so keep in touch. RON MAKARENKO A hard-working president was faithful Mack, A man like him we'd like to have back, For getting thinas done he had the knack, Come Fall, for the U of A he'll pack. ST. JOSEPH'S "ANNALS' Page 9 EUGENE CHOLLAK Running errands, and answering the door, Our friend "Chubby" won't do any more, To him school was never a bore, So to greater occupations he will soar. VICTOR BAKER A Chemical Engineer he wishes to be, A preview of his ability we did see, When he helped in the chem. lab you and me, His talents are rare for Chemistry. MELVIN CROPLEY To describe his likes, "Hunting" is the noun, Since he always headed out of town With the Prokop Bros, and his Prefect brown, Mel is one who will not let you down. DON BOYER Don was so active throughout the year, Vice-Pres. of Teen Club, then more near, Vice-Pres. of St. Joe's, which brings a tear, For a finer leader will not appear. SHIRLEY A. DITTBERNER When Shirley showed us all the "ring," We thought it was a lovely thing, To her studies, she still will cling, Before she leaves for her final fling. ED BURCHAK Our favorite man with eyes of blue, Was so chivalrous, when came the cue, And confidentially from me to you, The teachers will have him next year too. RAY GYULAI The navy is the career which suited Ray, With Sea Cadets acting P.O., we've heard say. In Trig, class his brilliance saves the day. We should see him soon getting Admiral's pay. JIM CATTONI "Most Likely to Succeed" Jim was voted in, Basketball games he helped to win, Loud cheers by grade nines created a din, Hard it will be to find his twin. DARLENE HINES Although much time the Teen Club took, Dario never forgot her books, At St. Mike's this August if you will look, Her friendly smile will be in every nook. PATRICIA CHILD Pat begins the day by going to Mass, And is usually quiet during class. We all laughed at jokes she did pass For she's a very comical lass. Page 10 ST JOSEPH'S "ANNALS" ^zacluatzi. MIKE "TUD" PROKOP Mike was our artist so supreme, He always featured a wolf so mean, A neat, steady worker he has been, In activities his interest keen. JOHN VASELENAK A great star of the basketball game, However, in class, not quite the same. "Honso" a nickname he does claim, Is a short form that has brought him fame. ED RICE As president of Cabogi, second-year Ed, Was really busy it has been said On his departure tears should be shed, But we'll wish him success in his future, instead. RAY WHITTICK Ray, in charge of St. Joe's treasure, When he leaves will find more pleasure, Learning how to fit and measure, Pipes, so he will have more leisure. KAY SALMON President of C.Y.F. has been Kay, Blonde and pretty, very gay, She's a very fine leader, so if we may, Add, Vice Pres, of Cabogi, by the way. THERESA WOLK A willing and eager worker was she, Well-known her scholastic record officially With her fine traits she holds the koy For a successful future, which hers will be. DOUG TOMPKINS As editor of our book of the year His work deserves praise, said oft in his ear. He won't be in Lethbridge next year I fear, We sure will miss him if he won't be here. MARIAN ZUBACK She has such a personality sweet, Attire that always looks so neat, Always active, she's one you can't beat, A nicer girl 'twill be hard to meet. ELEANOR "TURB" TURBIS Since I wrote these, myself I shall not praise For fear I should go on for days and days, But I do like music and putting on plays, And editing the school paper was my craze. WE THREE After months of.hard work we three, The editor, business manager, and me, Put out an edition that made history. ST. I was welcomed at the station by a delega­tion of the most prominent citizens of the district. At the head of the receiving line stood Mayor Edward Burchak who presented me with a silver key to the City. Next came oil magnate James Cattoni who, it. was rumored, is still literally digging for oil in the foothills. Stanley Pisko, decked out in his huge white ten gallon hat, is the prosperous rancher, who was feting my visit by a maginficent banquet and a ball at his luxur­ious hotel. Anyone of importance would be at the function and I was anticipating the event with great eagerness. Before the festivities got under way, however, a tour of the city was on the agenda. A sleek yellow con­vertible drew up to the station and accompanied by His Worship, our tour began. As we drove along I noticed the immense change in the city itself. The population is now a quarter million and the business district bears out the fact that the city is now a com­mercial area of considerable importance. Stopping at the huge Catelli plant, I chatted several minutes with the manager of the firm, who is now also vice-president of the Canadian chain, Charles Lazzarotto. In fact, the president, Frank Mrazek himself, was in the city at the time, to be present at a court hearing on a monopoly charge, which was to commence the next day. A noted firm of lawyers, Tomkins and Rice, was handling the case, with Judge Cropley presiding. My nekt stop was at a garment factory, which also houses a large modelling salon. The company is owned and operated by Anne Leverick who boasted that one of her top designers is also one of Canada's top ten, Miss Mona Patience. The tour continued with an inspection of the new municipal hospital, one which would also be the home of the Cobalt Bomb. Chief of staff Dr. LaValley, and Supt. of Nurses, Miss Hines, welcomed me and showed me through the building. In the training wing, I was delighted to find that Miss Zuback is Head Instructress and Shirleyanne Dittberner is the laboratory technician instructress. While on the way to the Dominion Science Laboratory, I noticed a theatre marquee billing the famous colora-turo soprano, Kay Salmon. Another theatre gave top billing to that rugged star, Edward Ferenz, who has very decidedly taken Alan Ladd's place in the movie kingdom. At the Laboratory I met that world-famous news-physicist, Victor Baker. I was not surprised to find John Vaselenak head of the Biology department. Others, I learned, who had turned to science for their livelihood were Ron Makarenko, a chemical engineer, who works at a city petroleum refinery, a
