Dillenbeck began teaching grades seven and eight in Foremost in September of 1956. Prior to this, she taught at Highfield, Orion and Taber, making a total of twenty-three years of teaching before retirement in 1972. Mrs. Dillenbeck did much for student activities in her years at Foremost. She was advisor of the Junior High Student's Union for five years and organized and supervised the Junior Student's Annual Magazine during this same period. As a coach of the Junior girls basketball team for seven years, she also assisted with the organization of noon hour games and tournaments for bus students. Also being active in teacher's organizations, she chaired group discussions at Local Teacher's Institutes and was an active member of the Medicine Hat Teacher's Convention Planning Committee for the County of Forty Mile. We would like to dedicate this 1971-72 yearbook to Mrs. Dillenbeck in appreciation for her years of teaching and service to the students of the Foremost School. I. E. Kabayama PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Education is an encounter with oneself. If a student does not find his time at Foremost School disturbing or difficult, you have missed the purpose of education. The aims of education at Foremost School is to give the students the opportunities to pursue meaningful purposes in his total developement. Each student differs from one another. Each student's perception of his life differs from his parents and his teachers. Foremost School offers the opportunities for challenges, encounters, confrontations, participation, counselling and guidence; the student can then develope fully in the cognitive, the affective and the psychomotor domains. Voeller John A. Wolfe Diane M. Wolosiuk VALEDICTORIAN About twelve years ago I walked into the Etzikon school with my aunt. It was my first trial day at school and I was scared to death. My excitment was not helped by the fact that my mother was in the hospital with my third sister. All I can remember about that first day of school was walking through the door of the classroom and thinking what a great big lonely place it was. That day was the start of something that I'm only now beginning to understand — my eduacation. Around the same time the rest of the class of '71 were going through somewhat the same emotions. With our teachers as our guides we embarked on a twelve year journey. They were to lead us through jungles of books, over rapids in rivers of words and to help us to find stepping stones in bogs made to trap the inexperienced. Tonight the end of that journey has finally come. Unfortunately our guides has to wait until now for us to realize what they were trying to do for us. Meanwhile our parents were making up the backup crew. They were always there when we needed them, whether for encouragement or scolding. They tried to mold us into "responsible adults". We didn't always fit the mould they had caste for us, which resulted in friction on both sides. Sometimes the mould was recaste, sometimes we changed and at other times neither did. No matter what happened we still have alot of rough edges to be worn off. This twelve year journey didn't just provide knowledge of the three R's — but gave us time with people our age; who had the same feelings and problems as we had. The hours we spent talking, much to our teachers' sorrow, weren't really wasted. The things we learned about people in those gab sessions in the last twelve years will be just as valuable to us as our formal education. School days gave some idea of what to expect in the outside world — when we;re away from our guides and protectors for good. We could see the laughter and tears, the hope and despair, the love and prejudice that we know exist in the world today. We learned that life it what you make it. Peace of mind isn't something that just happens; it is searched for. We learned that no one can stop you from thinking and thought is the greatest tool we have to forge out a life for ourselves. We learn to see the dangers of conformity and the hopelessness of the nonconformists. To really live in this world we can be neither. We must let our conscience be the guide, not anyone else's. But while we are living we cannot ignore what our living is doing to other people. So we reach for the impossible middle road; that somewhere inbetween where we remain ourselves and still a useful part of society. All this simply shows is that our education didn't stop in the classroom in the twelve years we spent coming to school. We were learning every minute of the time we spent coming to school. We were learning every minuteoof the time we spent laughing in the spares, in training for sports, at the parties and the dances. We will continue to learn every day, for each new idea and each new experience bring out more to be questioned and more to be learned. So day after day the process goes on for the rest of our lives. Since education carries so much further than just school perhaps the most important thing to be gained from the past twelve years is a basis for discrimination — a foundation to build the rest of our lives on. This is just a starting point; because as far as life is concerned ---- we've only just begun. PROPHECY Twelve years - wow! That is an excessive amount of time. Using the mathematical approach this period comes to 14,112 hours of sitting in school, give or take a few of course for a round of golf, a game or two of pool, or simply just a cup of coffee in the local coffee shop. But this has merely been the warmup before the hockey game. Now we must step onto the ice prepared I hope to be battered and slammed into the boards until we each score that all important goal.I propose to tell you the coaches just how the season will unfold. So as not to be different I shall begin at "A". Here we find Teresa Acehaida and Eleanor Amlin. What a pair! Teresa plans to further her education in college then hopefully to go into the field of data processing. Eleanor wants to make like the birds and fly; becoming an airline stewardess is her goal. Joan Bailey appears next. She has chosen a rewarding career deciding to become a nurses aid. Peggy Bourret is following a line of work in which her skill at typing will be of great benefit. Yes, Peggy has her sights set on being a secretary. Warren Rochy Burton is next and he talks of taking a course in business administration. Before doing this he plans to work one year simply because the type of "goat" Hochy drives does not thrive on grass but instead on expensive Esso Extra. I now come across my first question mark, Bev Butterwick, he is quite undecided. However he does not stand alone, Tom Cooper is another who does not know what field to venture into. Lucy Cross although uncertain of just exactly what she wants to do is at present working in Arizona; perhaps this will help her to make a decision. Along with Joan, Leona Fauth is to become a nurses aid. Good luck you two. Suddenly another question mark blocks my path. That of Chris Flexhaug; you will find something Chris I'm sure. A farmer turned gas man; I don't believe it Tai. This is quite true though. Canadian Western National Gas has acquired a new employee by the name of Val Gaetz. Yet another seeking secretarial work is Sharon Garber. She plans to become a dental assistant; but remember Sharon a dentist does not allow basketballs in the front office. I have now come across one of the better students, Brenda Hansen, who plans to attend the U. of L. and take a course in ecology. Joan Hearn is working her way towards being a hairdresser. If you curl hair as well as you curl rocks Joan you should indeed have no problem. George Henlin along with a few helpful college courses such as deisel mechanics has taken a fancy to ranching. Joanne Heninger is building upon her education by attending Rick's College in Idaho. Joanne hopes to be a social worker. Her brother Larry who is at present travelling in England wants to be a farmer. I just don't see it! Duane Herbst is another on the list who wishes to always feel the good old earth under his feet; ranching or farming is his future. Seeking the same goal as Sharon is Arlene Hougen. My, aren't those dentists lucky. Edward Ivanics choses to be a farmer with a boost from an agricultural course in college. May the good Lord be with you Ed, no one else is! Shirley Johnson reveals one more question mark in my list of grads. Another Johnson, although no relation is Gordon who I'm afraid also wants to be a farmer. The University of Lethbridge may consider itself lucky. It shall be acquiring another brain the likes of Marilyn Kimmitt who will be taking an arts course there. Secretarial school is a popular place. Karen Lengyl is also taking up the idea. Karen wishes to use her training in the field of psychiatric help. A circus clown or an important man ot the world; only Norman himself can decide. May your choice be a good one. "All-Hound Canadian Cowboy"; something I'm sure Clark Metheral dreams of off and on. In the meantime however the University of Lethbridge will be home for Clark. Like Rochy, Phillip Newton chooses a career where he will need a secretary - well! College and a business ndministratin administration course is Phillip's immediate goal. Until Ed Sullivan finally calls him up for his show Blaine Poberxnick will casually attend college in Lethbridge enrolled in outdoor recreation and counselling. Miss Brain, the scholar herself, our one and only Carolyn Rumpel looks forward to attending the University of Edmonton. Psychology will be her area of pursuit. With a farm in the foreground Richard Seward awaits completing a livestock production course which he is presently tackling at Olds College. So as not to leave Carolyn on her own Mylo also will attend the University of Edmonton. He plans to partake in the field of Arts and Sciences. Obviously being a secretary is a popular future, for undaunted, still another fellow grad chooses to follow this route. Cynthia Thompson along with the others plans to attend secretarial college. "Alexander the Great Treiber" soon will be a fitting title for Craig as he has joined the Armed Forces and plans to become General. Being one of those tall long haired brains Allen Vanden Berg will undoubtedly attend university. His pad likely will be located at the University of Lethbridge. His courses though are stillat the mercy of his ever changing mind. Question marks are a popular thing with our class and Luella Voeller does not wish to be different. At present her future plans are merely whims. With many thoughs in mind Diane Wolosuik is enrolnng at the U.ofL. and trill likely pursue a venturesome field. Finally that long haired creep himself plans only to live and to learn for a while untilfate takes its course. I proclaim that the season ahead will be a rewarding one. I sincerely hope you coaches out ih there will be proud. Although standing here in a black garment as I am does not give me the authority of a minister I still must say to each and every one of you - God Bless - it has been great. Good luck.HISTORY Since September of 1959 our class has been making history. Most of us couldn't wait to start school with one exception. Joan Bailie must have been warned about school because she shed a few tears that first day. Later on that year Brenda thought she had learned all there was to know and decided to walk home. Needless to say we had a little excitement that day. We all soon learned that recess was our favorite subject. Grade Two was interesting. The red measles gave a few of us some extra holidays that year. We found that we could carve rabbits out of ivory soap. It was a good thing we started with large bars of soap because most of us ended up with tiny bunnies instead of large rabbits. Recess was still interesting since now the boys were chasing the girls. It's strange the number of slow female runners we had that year. Luella joined us that year and brought with her many exciting stories. In grade three Mrs. Atkins shocked her class when she came with her hair tinted red. We probably didn't learn much that day. I wonder if Clark remembers falling off the monkey bars and hitting his head. Clark is still falling off things-like horses- but I guess he has a reason to now. In grade four Diane joined us from Calgary and soon became one of the secretaries. Remember how much work we got out of that year Diane? Some of us were put in with the grade three's. I think we gave those kids a rough time about being demoted. Those of us with Mr. Cahoon enjoyed singing such songs as "It's a Long Way To Tiperarie" and "Little Brown Church In The Valley". Despite all this we moved on to grade five. Again we were split up, with some of us going with the grade six's. The kids in Mrs. Miller's room had to wear name tags and most of them weren't too pleased to say the least. Rochy and Ed decided this was the time to show two girls who was boss. With tacks on the ends of their rulers they laid in wait for Teresa and Eleanor after school. After suffering from pains and bruises they told on the guys. Their gym period was taken away and ail ended well I think. Fox and Geese proved to be too tame a game for us in grade six so we turned to the sport of snow ball throwing. Too bad Mr. Scherer caught us and made us spend our noonhours indoors. This was also the year of our great Red Cross Meetings that usually ended in disaster. Needless to say they were discontinued. Can we ever forget our great baseball games? I do believe that we all lived for the game no matter what positionwe got stuck with or how many times we struck out. In grade seven we considered ourselves to be quite sophisticated since we were allowed to participate in Student's Union activities. Mrs. Dillenbeck tried to convince us that there was an easy way to divide and that health classes could be quite interesting. She also tried to convince Teresa that her skirt lengths should come down. Our acting careers started that year with the productions of "The Lighthouse Keepers Daughter" and "Almost Beheaded". As we continued to mature (our teachers may debate this) we continued to enjoy ourselves in grade eight. We can remember the debates and speeches we gave for Mr. Rowley's class and we remember when Joanne popped through her homemade Kellogg's box. Basketball practices and games continued with Mr. and Mrs. McNaney and Mr. Depaulie insisting we run far too many laps. Mr. Cahoon tried to make a basketball star out of Rochy but most of us believed that Rochy just went along for the ride. Grade nine was a great year. Teachers and parents told us we should worry about departmental exams but our moto was - why worry? Peggy came from Lethbridge that year and the great invasion from the south hit us that year too. Mr. Cahoon kept us busy at noon hour with long division questions. How we made it through Social is beyond us. After we lost our great baseball fan Mr. Moyer we tried the patience of Mr. Hainsworth. We even rolled his speakers podium down the hall and I'm not sure he really appreciated that. Acting abilities were shown again in the productions of "A Health To John Patch" and "Pen of My Aunt". Karen was probably the oldest person to stand in the corner thanks to Mr. Wetzel. It really wasn't your fault was it Karen? With grade ten came the privileges of participating in Senior High Functions but I don't think senior high was ready for us. We can be proud that Eleanor was our School Queen that year. One social class was exciting when Cynthia threw a brush at George who happened to duck. The brush hit Mr. Kelly and his nice black pants were all covered with yellow chalk. The Music Ten class did their thing one night when they appeared on stage in bed sheets. We still don't knowif it was all of our singing or just Blaine's alnging or the bare shoulders of the girls that got us our standing ovation.Things really started happening in grade eleven. Our water fight in the girls shower room was coming along fine until Miss Phillips appeared on the scene. We weren't easily discouraged however as we managed to get Mr. Edlund into the shower later on that year. While in the lab we had a wet time. The guys discovered that eye droppers made good water pistols. Most of us came out of physics class a bit wet to say the least. Grade twelve was a wonderful year and we each have our special memories. Thanks to Miss Payne for showing the girls how to sew. I think they learned something. Thanks to Miss Phillips for the patience. It took us three years to learn that you don't pronounce things the way they look. Thanks to Mr. Buswell we can now figure out the probability of picking a red ball out of a box and the truth value of the statement it is raining or it is nice outside. Thanks to Mr. McNaney for the "guiding hands" in the lab. Thanks to Mr. Cahoon for keeping us in shape with windsprints. Too bad your pants got tied up in knots though. Thanks to Mr. Cross we now have plenty of reliable secretaries who can type to music. Thanks to Mr. Trekofski. We may never figure younout but we will probably never forget you. We may still go through life wasting our time though. Thanks to Mr. McDonald for keeping the guys occupied in the shop. Believe it or not they are useful for something. Thanks to Mr. Kabayama who just couldn't quite understand how we made it as far as we had. You would have been sure we were all crazy if you had been in the lab when Mylo walked into the storage closet asking"Ethyl, Ethyl, where are you Ethyl?" We found out later it was ethyl alcohol he was looking for - poor Mylo. Then there was Rochy and his garter snake. He chased the girls out of the lab, down the haT1, and into the library with that thing, We refused to return to the lab unless accompanied by Mr. Kabayama. Remember Corolyn if anything went wrong with an experiment John blamed it on the "Line Sisters". Thanks to Mr. Edlund who had the largest physics class on record- six students. Despite all the noise that came from the physics room they assured us that they were learning something. And a special thanks to Mrs. Streifel who made English classes something we could bear. Remember we string tape across four rows of desks, stuck matches to the tape and then lit the matches. Too bad we couldn't have had a big fire. Then the day we had the airplane war with our paper jets. At Christmas time we wrote lwtters to 'Santa Clause' for each other. I wonder if Allen got his fire-engine red boots, if Johnny got his Lexie-trician set or if Eleanor got her six foot blonde. We experienced weddings, divorces and trials in English 30 and we even presented our teacher with a dunce cap which she wore proudly. Yes, those were the days and we will never willingly forget them. Each and every one of us was needed to make our class history a unique one. I can only hope my fellow graduates that your futures will be filled with such wonderful moments as those we have experienced. The best of luck to all of you. I'll huff, and I'll puff..,.
