This is composed' 'Of pictures and events in our school, this year as well as a brief ihistory of our school and community in the past. In the future •the Turin Junior High School students will be vanned to the new (Junior-Senior High School in Picture BUtte. Some will be sorry to •see our Junior High School close but with the present trend toward ! .'school centralization the change is inevitable and for the better. ■; j.Larger schools can offer more in academic and vocational subjects • rand students must be prepared to get a better education to face ■! (the challenges in our society today. j As you read through our yearbook you will see that many in •our community received their education in the one roomed school. j (This type of teaching and education may have served its purpose ~ ;in its time but in the technological era in which we are now •• :living a good education is a must. But bear in mind that all j /children cannot go to university; some must be trained for other » ’.vocations, such as agriculture, industry and clerical work to j ;name a few. Success or failure does not depend upon what we lack * •but upon the uses we make of what we have. Remember - It is not J ■what he has, nor even what he does which directly expresses the -j (worth of a man, but what he is. acui X- v THE GOOD OLD DAYS ------IN SCHOOL The principal of a Canadian school has provided these rules posted by an elementary principal in 1872. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day’s session. Teachers each day will fill lamps, clean chimneys and trim wicks. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly. After ten hours in school, the teachers should spend the remaining time reading the Biole or other good books. WOMEN TEACHERS WHO MARRY OR ENGAGE IN OTHER UNSEEMLY CONDUCT WILL BE DISMISSED. Every teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop, will give good reason to suspect his worth, intentions, integrity and honesty. EDITORIAL In ray opinion this has been one of the best years at Turin. It is plain now that all the years of schooling up to the present time have been worth­while, and that all the years to come can and will be rich and rewarding if we exploit all opportunities to the full. Granted, the process of learning is often a difficult one, but it is not until the goal is reached that the satisiaction you nad in attaining that goal is recognized. Most of the battle is carried on within the four walls of the classroom. This yearbook was composed mainly because this is Centennial Year. I would like to thank all the yearbook staff and advisors for all their help without which this book would not have been possible and all the teachers whose patience, humor and knowledge have been invaluable. The publication of a yearbook demands a great deal of co-operation, and I think that the demand has been filled. I hope you enjoy our book. Our caretakers are Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Sinclair. Mr. Sinclair came to this area in 1910. He attended school at the Turin West and Gold Ridge schools. In 193? he married Lena Trofanenko. Eight years later, in July 19^3, Mr. Sinclair became janitor. The first wages were $75.00 a month. For twenty-six years he worked at the Canadian Factory. and Mrs. Sinclair have three Larry is a draftsman in Calgary, Warren is in Atlanta, Georgia. Marvin resides in Lethbridge. Three years ago, in 196*+ Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair received a tray from the Turin Home and School in appreciation of twenty years conscientious work and care given our school. TURIN SCHOOL - WINTER 1967. This page is sponsored by Juris Livestock, Picture Butte, Alberta. SPORTS REPORT This year was an enjoyable and competitive one. In the fall we had a game of football against Iron Springs. We lost by a narrow margin. We enjoyed playing two matches of volleyball against Enchant with our boys’ and girls' teams. One match was at Enchant; the other here. During the winter, boys teams and girls teams played intramural games at noons. In Little League baseball, coached by Mr. Papworth and Mr. Haughian, we didn’t win any games but we at least tried. Circle Hill, Vauxhall, Hays and Taber were in the league with us. We played in a boys and girls basketball league with five other teams: Crescent, St. Catherines, Nobleford, Coalhurst and Iron Springs. The boys team, coached by Mr. Panworth and John Papworth, did not make the tournament, but showed up well in their games. The girl’s team, coached by Mrs. Deimuth, made the play-offs but lost their first game to Huntsville. Cheerleaders went to all league games to encourage the teams. In our Physical Education classes, taught by Mr. Papworth. we did a variety of things. The boys played football, basketball soccer, volleyball, baseball and tumbled. The girls played softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball and tumbled. We hope to have a baseball team and a trackmeet in June. Projects have been started and brought to a successful conclusion. Our first big project was our magazine campaign. Everyone pulled together and we sold over $600.00 worth of magazines. Of this $U77.00 was stolen. The thief was convicted but no restitution was made. However, the school's commission was covered by insurance. Although the Dog Patch invaders came and went in one night, the memory of the games, dancing, and fun at our Sadie Hawkins Party will linger long in our memories. Another of our projects was the building of the school skating rink. Everytime the rink was flooded and began to freeze, a thaw would come. Due to this5our rink never was completed. At Christmas, instead of exchanging Christmas gifts, the Student's Union decided to collect money to be donated to the Cup of Milk Fund. Over $30.00 was realized. Sports equipment such as basketballs, volleyballs, and basketball nets has been purchased. We have participated in basketball and volleyball games with other schools. Although we were not always winners, it was fun and good experience to meet students from other schools. Record hops were held and profits were recorded. Being president of Student's Union for this Centennial Year has been a great privilege. The co-operation of the executive and the members has been appreciated. On behalf of the Student's Union I would like to thank Mrs. McBeath and Mr. Papworth for helping us in our activities. The topic is one pertaining to safety on the farm such as water safety, safety with equipment and so on. Each student is expected to try his hand at writing a composition. The teacher then has the job of selecting two of the best essays. These, in turn, go to the Superintendent who judges the best essay in the County of Lethbridge. As you see, there is a great deal of competition. The winner receives a pin in recognition of his efforts and the school receives a pls.que. This, however, isn’t the end. The best essays are sent to Edmonton where judges choose the winning essay for the province of Alberta. The provincial winner receives an expense paid trip to Edmonton with their teacher. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Everyone enjoys gbing to a school dance or record hop and the junior high students of Turin are certainly no exception. Here is what the Turin Students: Union enjoyed for social functions After the new term started any excuse was a good excuse for holding a record hop. Thats what we did. They turned out well and three of them were held for the kids who like dancing and listening to the latest records and that includes most any teen. In November the students concocted weird cc/stumes and borrowed different faces for the annual Sadie Hawkins Party. Nearly everyone was appropriately dressed so it turned out to be a fun filled evening. Of course we thought about having skating and tobogganing parties but with Southern Alberta's weather, it was difficult to plan outdoor events. We haven't had our snring prom but a lot of kids are already planning for the occasion. It promises to be really great. A great deal of hard work goes into making a social function successful. As social convenor, I would like to thank our staff advisor, Mrs. McBeath; our janitor, Mr. Sinclair; the parents and teacher supervisors and the other members of the social committee who have made our social functions worthwhile. GRADE ONE The Grade One Centennial Class would like to tell you about some of their interests and activities. Our special events of the year include a Hallowe’en party, Christmas concert and Valentine party. However, the event that causes the most frenzy for us, is the droning of the fire bell. At this time, we are paraded to the outside. When we arrive there, one of our classmates, looks disappointly to the teacher and exclaims, "But teacher, where is the fire?" Everyone is looking forward to being in Mr. Papworth’s room because he teaches such difficult work. We like Mrs. McBeath because she is so pretty and Mrs. Burroughs because she is so generous, often surprising us with candy as she passes through the classrooms. One person in our room wants to grow up to be a "piano", just like Mrs. Hammon. Some of us only take lunch when Mrs. Gier is to be in the lunch room, because she sometimes smiles and says, "Alright you may leave your cookie today." Our resolution is to appreciate the teachers we have because when our class was consulted on how they would discipline the naughty children, some of the ideas were quite violent. In a school administered by our pupils, the culprit would be pinched on the arm, held up and dropped, dunked in a snowbank or even tied in the clothes closet. There are fifteen in Grade two and six in Grade three. Our teacher is Mrs. Gier. We have completed two Enterprises. One on "How Mail Travels" and "Christmas in Other Lands." We are now doing an Enterprise on "Life on Ships." Nine Grade 3 pupils from Mrs. Hammon’s room are taking it with us. Every Monday afternoon the Grade 1 room visits us and together we listen to Mrs. Mercer on the "Listen and Sing" radio program. We enjoyed the Christmas Operetta, "The Magic Christmas Bell." The hoys in our room were "puddings" and the girls were balloons. Mr. and Mrs. Stronski bought and filled the balloons. Our favorite games in the gymnasium are "School’s Out", "Flying Dutcnman", and "Bean Bags." Our Hallowe’en Party with the Grade 1 room and the pre-schoolers was lots of fun. We paraded through the rooms in our funny costumes and made everyone laugh. We played games and had lunch. We are now learning how to write. Our teacher says if we try hard we will become good writers. Our New Year’s resolutions are to work hard at school, help our parents at home and be respectful to the teachers. Grade b- has two teachers and Grade 3 has three teachers. Our subjects are Mathematics, Spelling, Enterprise, Language. Writing, Science, Health and Reading. We have Art on Friday and Physical Training on Monday and Friday. Our room took part in the Christmas Concert of 1966. We have a reading table with chairs. There is a person in our room who can draw very well. Her name is Donna Mehalko. We have a piano in our room and we sing almost every morning. There are ten children in Grade Five and nine in Grade Six. Our room teacher is Mrs. Burroughs. Mrs. Hammon teaches Art and Music, while Mrs. Burroughs teaches Science and Health in Grades Three and Four in exchange. We enjoy our Physical Education period with different games, exercises and dancing. We also like our Art and Music periods. Charts and diagrams, with cut out Pictures and drawings, help us in our Social Studies, Science and Health. For Christmas we decorated our classroom with friezes made with old Christmas cards and with coloured pictures. We are decorating our classroom with Centennial pictures, about Canadian history, also for Valentine's Day and for Easter. Our Junior Red Cross had a candy sale in November. We collected $26.00., $12.00 for the Magazine campaign and $l1+.00 for the Red Cross. We are collecting all types of coupons and stamps for Red Cross Funds. In all, school days are enjoyable. Darvll Trofenanko Bryan Warnock DRAMA This year the Grade 7 and 8 class chose the subject Drama out of three choices: Drama. Art or Community Economics. We started out doing pantomines. After them, we graduated into ten minute plays with conversation in them. First we presented them in our classroom and then the one called "Welcome Home" was put on in the Christmas Concert. The other plays, "The Answer is Yes", "Meet the Boss", "Children’s Entrance", "Turn About", "Loan me a Dollar", and "Flat Tire" were put on in morning assembly. After Christmas we started on half hour plays which were presented in April. The names of the plays were: "He Tried with His Boots on", "The Search for Wildcat McGillicuddy", and "Wanted a Housekeeper". Our drama classes have helped us develop more poise and self confidence. We learn not to be self conscious when getting up and talking or acting in front of people. We think our drama cla
