We are looking forward to the summer vacation, thinking of the wonderful holidays we will be able to enjoy. However, I hope that the students of Wilson School are not expecting to get complete happiness from just doing no™ thing. Whether you are at school, at home, or out playingj your growth and development are continuing. If you wish to become a good Canadian citizen you will need skills, know­ledge, and proper attitudes. You will never get these by lying around doing nothing. If your school work was unsatisfactory this year - catch up on It in the summer and get a good start next year. If there are ways you can help around home, spend a part of each day doing these things. If you are playing on any team or with others, trjr to follow the rules of fair play and good sp ort sraanship, You will enjojr your activities more, and you will be much happier if 3rou are active and vigorous - If you are al­ways striving to be better than you are. So, as we set you free from school rules and discipline, why not put yourself under your own discipline In order that you might have a use­ful, healthful and happier summer vacation.G. Kesler.6 - The Students Union Executive 1957 Speeches were given by some nervous nail-chewing lads and lasses for the offices in the Student Council on Wednes’l afternoon assembly in September. On the following Friday til students awaited their turn to stuff the ballot boxes. When the votes were counted seven popular and worthy students wer chosen for the coveted positions. These and representatives! from each room contributed their valuable (?) time and effoil to the school. The ready and able staff advisor, Miss J. M<| faithfully and willingly (?) attended each meeting. By the I these meetings were held on Tuesday noons in 208 where our d pendable representatives argued over and discussed many imp] ant topics. They sat tearing their hair out over such thin/: as dances, Christmas raffle, dances, theatre party, dances, skating parties, etc. Oh, yes another thing; dances. Card parties and a variety concert were held during ti by Grace Flathen, SecretaryValedictory by Marilyn Roelofs - 7 - Mr. Turner, honored <*uests, parents, teachers, and fellow.graduates;. • I will he, ever grateful for the opportunity/ that 'was afforded',me to represent the 1957 graduates, of Wilson Junior High, in"expressing our farewell to this school and all the friends we leave .behind* It :ls with mixed feelings that we reflects upon the few years we have spent here, and, look for­ward to our future. . As we look back to our first day in school, it was the teachers who comforted us and gave us confidence to face the new world. Since then, our teachers have instilled in us what we know of the three R's, with.a little science, French and Literature added for good, measure. Our physical devel­opment too, has not been forgotten. We will always remember our Phys. Ed, teachers, the exercises that seemed to us en­durance tests, but which really were not if we were in con­dition! and we will have to admit we had a lot of fun. We are not likely to forget our assembly programs. It was here that we found our teachers to .be. the good sports that' they are. We found that they could, be actors, comedians, music­ians, choristers, stage managers, or whatever the occasion demanded. We will think of the homework we wore supposed to have done, the last minute cramming for a promised test which never failed to become a reality! the detection about- which we complained so much but undoubtedly deserved. , We will always be grateful to all our teachers for their patience and tolerance, as I'm sure that they must have been exasperated almost beyond endurance at times with some of our, silly pranks, our incessant talking, and our apparent stupid-’ ity. All of these things we may not have appreciated at the i time, but we will look back with fond.memories, and like the ; characters in a play, those with whom we associated will live! in our memory for many years to come. And what about our future? The lessons we have learned, those teachers and fellow.students who have been sources of i encouragement and hel ■- to us, have laid the foundation. We : will go forward with confidence, most of us on to high school and a few perhaps into various vocations. Those of us who will continue In school, .look,.forward to more books, more [ homework, more tests, and more happy associations. In closing, we wish to thank all.those who have made these three years at Wilson Junior High such a pleasant ex­perience — the School Board for the beautiful school which we have had the privilege of attending, for the books and equipment made available for our use -- the teachers for their patience and perseverance, and the knowledge we have gleaned as a result -- our friends who have made each day so interesting. I hope we can-all go on from here, well pre­pared for the next stage in our' development, and that we shal all eventually be capable of taking the responsibilities re- 99—us as worthy citizens of our country.- 8 - Boys' and Girls1 Houseleague The school term of 1956—$7 saw a most successful year of houseleagueactivities come to a close with a close race for highest points. The activities held this year were; Soccor, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, and Track 8c Field. After all the cheering and point tabulation was finally concluded, House 3 emerged with top points. House I4. was a close second while House' 6 and House 1 finished third and fourth respect­ively. As a reward for gaining the highest points, the Hur­ricanes, as they are now known, received a very impressive trophy to be displayed by them until next term when it will be up for competition again. Participation has been so keen this year that next year- 1s plans for activities will see the addition of swimming, table tennis, tennis, tumbling and possibly dancing as added activities in which more students nay take part. Houseleague is a voluntary student activity and it is only through each and every student's own initiative that makes this activity as enjoyable and competitive as it is. Hopes are high that next year interest will be keener and more enthusiasm will be shown by everyone. One change made which wd hope will add more interest is that now the house- league teams will go under the names of Hurricanes, Tornadoes Typhoons and Whirlwinds. The students, besides competing for their own house teams, were also competing as individuals against their fel­low students to see which one could receive the most points and as a result receive a merit pin. This year the race was very close and narrowed down to two individuals in the boys' section with Richard Chollack from Room 209, edging out George Hart of Room 201 by a slim I4 point The girlssection witnessed a similar set-up as the boys, with Evelyn DeVos of Room 202 winning top honors and Sharon Irvine of Room 206 a close second. Stranger; Pardon me, but do you know a man in this town with one leg named John Brown? Old Timer; Can't say that I do, young man. What's the name of the other leg?.Boys' Basketball The Boys' Basketball Team is under the supervision of Mr. C. Turner.. They have played 12 games this year. Although they have lost 8 and won 4 games, they have greatly improved over previous years. In the games for the City Junior '-High basketballschampionship they played 3 exciting games against Paterson -narrowly losing the first by one point, winning the second by two points and losing the last one by ..three points. The boys have played two exhibition games, one with Sunnyside and the other with Diamond City - losing against Sunnyside and winning against Diamond City. Members of the team are; George Hart, Alan Hepple, LeRoy Kirchner., Tom As.croft,^ Dan Gyulai, Weyne Clark, Laurance Jones, Ricky Steadman, Ted Sillito, Mike Onofrychuk, and Jack Wessel- man. The boys have improved all through the year and we all hope that they will continue to do so in the future. by Harry Hermann Girls' Basketball Blanche has the ball, she passes to Lesley, who shoots - she scoresl There's the end of the first half. Yes, kids, that's how it went, all year the team worked and more team work. We have lost only one game against St, Joe's which was a league game. In this game, like all the rest, there was real excitment. Yes, Melanie, Blanche, Carol, Evelyn, Lesley, Sharon, Marjorie, Beverly, Diane & Jeanette, ,'have all played brilliant basketball and as a reward'they won the City Championship. These activities keep us busy-and'ksepg-away .from!trouble . .'Although many of us don'-ti.-know it, houseleague activities build up. our school spi- rit and teach us to fight for- our school to be proud to be one of a great many students.of our school.10 Orchestra Every Friday -=■'*■ noon everybody heads for cover. The school orchestra is going to practise now. Screeches are heard for the first ten or fifteen minutes frora all instru­ments but as violins can screech the most, we can hear Blanche Zeman and Marilyn Stewart much better. In the second step, which takes about ten minutes, you cannot hear screeches but Glenda Moore at the piano is playing "0 Canada1' Grant Norlin's trumpet is playing "Trumpeters Lullaby" and last but not least Bob Soltys Is playing "Drummer Boy". Ohl yes, the violins are playing "Hot Canary", and Mr. Simon is conducting the song they all are supposed to be playing -- "The Maple Leaf Forever". Finally after losing a lot of ■patience and a lot of time, their selection is ready for the "Home and School", "Drama Evenings", or for a special "Education Week". by Karen Seeley Tennis Out on the new tennis court you could hear Mr. Schmidt, head of the Tennis Club, started in October, instructing some new recruits. "Now watch, You hold the ball like this, throw it, and thenl Have you got it? You try it now." The sport, not familiar to too many, was the cause of a bulging roomful of tennis hopefuls-at the first meeting. Although there was a long list of names there weren't too many seen on the court, mainly because of the cold wea­ther. At the coming of spring the game was again resumed. by Fat Sillito Remember When? On September Jp the jail doors of Wilson were thrown wide open, and we, poor unfortunate little souls were force to enter in. "Vote For" signs were staring you in the face everywher you went around this school. And in a very democratic elec­tion, we elected our students' council. Frances Gow took five of the awards on Scholarship Day. We dared Mr. Turner to climb the fire truck ladder in the late fall. Result ........ Our "Get Acquainted" dance on October 19. The array cadets proved their durability on our Remem­brance Day program Nov. lip.I I Remember when? continued .'■ .........: Also Nov. lip, our combination skating party and dance at the Civic Centre. > * • A very nice sockhop was sponsored by. the cheerleaders Nov. 29• Everybody dressed to the. ’'gills’' in order to look their best at the Christmas Dance on Dec. lip. Some very enjoyable and comical room programs were put on after Christmas. Mr. Simon's car was "smashed" and Mr. Weller’s car re­fused to start. Our theatre party at the Capital Theatre Jan. 25* Mr. Kergan slipped' and :hurt his ' back'while 'Inspecting one of the schools who’s name we will keep unkown. The filmslide projector "mysteriously" disappeared,,; the pop machine money was accidently taken, and the record player was damaged. fir. Krulak got _the mumps, and some dangerous sickness left us without Mr. 'Collet .for quite a while. The clanging of bells, the beating of drums, the clash­ing of cymbols and the beautiful voices of. men, which togeth­er made up a very enjoyable Wednesday morning program, given by the Princess Patricia Band. Wayne Clark and. Sandra. Todd were announced Mr. and..Miss Wilson of 1957 our Valentine's Dance on Peb. 15» Many a familiar face was seen at our school on "Open House" day, March 5j> sponsored by our Home and School. A very panicky look struck eye, young and old, as they neared the door to the nurse’s room to get a polio shot. The basketball game between the boys' team and the ■ staff. Our girls' team became the City Champs. The Easter Exams which came on April 17 and 18, and of course had many questions on them which we innocent little monsters had never heard of before. This was because we never paid any attention in class throughout the year. Janice Day’s ^sleeve accidently caught the fire alarm bell and everybody ran for the nearest door. , aH help to cheer for- the contestants of Wilson at the Track Meet.Remember when? continued The grade 9's had a very successful Graduation Banquet by themselves and dance combined with Paterson & Hamilton at the L.C.I. on June 7» All the grade 9's studied (?) hard to pass the finals. The grade 7 and 8 students came back for their report cards in the end of June, while the grade 9 students took a last look at the inside of Wilson which they had learned to appreciate during their three-year stay here. Now that we have finished our review of 1956-57* we hope that you will remember the many happy days you had dur ing this school'year. by Wilhelmina Reedyk Pat Towle Our Principal by Carol Fisher We think our Principal is very good He always tries to help us Do everything we should. He knows about our studies He helps us with our proms, He knows most of our buddies And he knows our dads and moms. If we ask a favor Like putting on a dance He checks up our behaviour If good, we have a chance. But if too many have been bad And if our narks are poor He shakes his head, a trifle sad I’m sorry kids, no more. He likes to see us all have fun And he will be there too But if your homework isn't done It's just too bad for you. He wants us all to do our work He likes to see us play But if in any way we shirk There’s a detention to pay. He wants us all to do our best To improve in every way He likes to put us to the test To see if we work or play. Sometimes we think we hate him But right deep in our heart We know he's doing the Best for us From him we j 11 hat eg to part. - 12 - Handicraft s Loaded down with an.enormous amount of homework books, twenty hard-worked students shuffle their way into room 10l| at 1+ o'clock. Many of them look awfully pale, while, others just sit and stare into space, not actually thinking of any­thing. The more, energetic ones progress to the work shelves to try to find their lumps of clay, which are to become piggy- banks or figurines. For the people who do not know what goes on in this class, I will try to trace the procedure in making a figurine. To make a figurine you use some clay and pour it into a mold. That's all the hard work you can do the first day. The second day you begin to smooth and rub and smooth and get your hands all dirty trying to make the figurine look presentable. This goes on for a good many weeks. After you've done enough polishing, the great day cones when you have permission to paint your so called figurine. You pick out the colors you want and then ask Mr. Daw what to do. He gives you a fishy look, wonders if you're all there & calmly tells you to paint the figurine. So you go ahead and paint real careful so as not to make any smudges. The. result; one. blotchy mess. So you take your figurine and' get, it ready .for the kiln by glazing it. Don't have hysterics. Your fig­urine will not stay white.. Now that you have a finished pro­duct what are you going to.do with it. The answer!-- throw it into the nearest garbage can. by Pat Towle r • - 13 - School Paper From the lunch room ever;/, Monday tramps a fresh eager school paper staff. Into 210 marches the unit, read:/ for assignments. Our supervisor, fir. Collet, is ready with sten­cils and contributions, and down we go to the typing room. Papers are scattered, and stencil ink-gets all over including our hands and faces. Page 1 is ready to duplicate, so down it goes on. an empty desk. Page after page is ready for the Warbler. When finally all are ready. Lena explains the hard­est job is to come. Inquisitive as we are, we all volunteer to help with this job. And what Is it, Oh, No! We've got to find all the pages, and in this mess. About twenty minutes later all are found and we go upstairs but the bells are just ringing and what do we get -- more work, our nerves are kill­ing us. Maybe on Friday we.will not be so ambitious. Our seven members out of fifteen will turn up next week to help put out our ''Wilson Warbler!" by Karen Seeley- Ik - The Wilson Y Teen Girls.' Club The Wilson Y Teen Club is a club that every girl should belong to. This club is headed by Miss Gray and Mrs.. Lanier. The club had very interesting talks and very interesting people come to speak. This club has an executive of Lorna Matthews-President| Carol Miechkota-Vice-President; Paulette Katan-Secretary| and Pat Harris-Treasurer. They also have a few comroitties. The Wilson Y Teen. Club has a. special project Yvery year they send a box of food and clothing to Korea. by Mary Menzie Mr. & Miss Wilson 1957 Along the corridors of Wilson walk the most typical boy and girl students who were chosen at the Valentine Dance as i Mr. and Miss Wilson. Who are the most typical students? The: contestants who were judged were Marilyn Adnitt, Joyce. Burtoi Sandra Todd, and Gaye Wooldridge. For Mr. Wilson were Ken Butler, Wayne Clark, Howard Logan, and David Richards.- The I judges had a hard time picking the best ones but I'm sure i everyone is glad they were Sandra Todd and Wayne Clark. Thii year each contestant received flowers. The girls received a pink corsage and the boys received a white carnation.- The judging was done by Mrs. G. Flathen, Mr. J. Cousins, Mr. G... Frayne and Brent Seeley, We’re sorry that Mr.. G. Wilson could not make it this year but we hope to have him next year. The judging was bas on popularity, good marks in school work, personality, and poise. The best congratulations to Sandra Todd and Wayne Cl and to the runners up.
