Bussard, M.A., M.Ed., Supt. cStaiiiJi Quo QVot From Roman times the expression 'Status quo' has been handed down through the ages. It has the meaning of keeping things as they are. It could be the goal of a school system that wishes to maintain its present services but not to improve them. It is not the aim of the Lethbridge School Board which has the dual responsibility of providing accommodation for a student body that is increasing at the rate of three hundred pupils a year, and of continuously improving the quality of the services which it provides the boys and girls of this city During the past five years, the school population has in­creased from 2,400 to over 3,500. The opening of the Collegiate, Allan Watson and Susie Bawden Schools has not been suffi­cient to accommodate this increase. In September the Wilson Junior High will open its doors to the students of North Leth­bridge. Within the next few years additional schools will be required in the north and southeast sections of our city In 1952 many of our services were expanded and improved. The physical welfare of all pupils has now become a school responsibility Our medical staff of one doctor and three nurses examines every pupil in the elementary and junior high schools at least once a year. Physical defects are noted so that they can be corrected before they become serious. The evening classes in the commercial and technical de­partments were expanded. One hundred and seventy adults took courses in one or more of the following fields: Woodwork, automotives, home economics, metals, carpentry, electricity stenography bookkeeping and typewriting. Because of the many new Canadians in this area, English classes have been instituted. Central and Galbraith operate classes during the day for those boys and girls who must learn the English language before they can benefit from regular class­room placement. From October to the end of March, seven classes for New Canadian adults were held ai Central. Two hundred and fifty- five students, ranging in ages from 15 to 60, attended these evening classes. This year the pre-school classes, which have been in opera­tion in Westminster and Galbraith for two years, were extended to all the elementary schools. On May 1st, over four hundred six-year-olds started their educational careers. In September these veterans of two-months' schooling will be ready to engage in the formidable task of obtaining an education. During the past year, five provincial school inspectors re­ported very favorably on the work being done in the Hamilton Junior High School. What an opportunity to give an outline of the doings of our association for the current year. Pankhurst Treasurer—Mrs. V Nyrose The Hamilton Junior High Home and School group has en­joyed an interesting year of activities. At the beginning of the year identification pins, donated by the Alberta Wheat Pool, were given to each members in hopes that the members would become better acquainted. We had many interesting speakers at our meetings Fire Chief Short, Mrs. Denny and Mr. J. Platt from the School of Technology and Art, Calgary A panel discussion by a teacher and a parent on homework, attitudes, report cards and literature, provoked much discussion which was carried over to another meeting. Mr. L. H. Bussard spoke on Current Trends in Report Cards. Mr. Woolley yave a talk on Progressive Edu­cation. This was followed by a "buzz" session. A number of the members helped very materially in making costumes and flowers for the school operetta "May Day in Welladay." Each meeting had half an hour lunch time. The lunch convener for the first two years was Mrs. Jarvie. For the pres­ent year, Mrs, Ponech. This proved to be an excellent oppor­tunity for teacher and parent to become acquainted. In June the association is making arrangements for a grad­uation dance for Grade IX's and their parents. The association wishes to express its thanks to the students, teachers and parents for a very successful school year.^PiincLji a/d <^A/\EiiacjE Our Junior High School has made much school history in the past three years. In 195G-51 the School Board decided to organize the first Junior High School in the history of the City, and our school was then known as the Lethbridge Junior High School. The following year the name “Lethbridge” was changed to “Hamilton” in honor of Mr W A. Hamilton, respected and esteemed citizen of the City of Lethbridge. During the three years of operation the school has accommodated all students of the City taking Grades VII, VIII and IX, and the staff and Stud­ents have given their whole-hearted co-operation in working under crowded conditions. This year marks another milestone in that a certain number of our students will be diverted to the new Wilson Junior High School. We are sorry to see you leave for it is difficult to say farewell to such an excellent student body, many of whom will be attending the new Junior High School. We extend our best wishes for your continued success and we shall watch your progress with much interest. The school year 1952-53, when our first lessons for our school life in Room 27 commenced. The room teacher is Mr. Watson; the subject Mathematics. Tops in this subject is Fred Sandercock with his cute haircut and his ever-cheerful disposition. Don Glover is our math dictionary and questioner. Bob Hamilton, a quiet, dependable boy along with Joe Lyons, who never sleeps during classes are two schol­ars who make marks in this subject. Second period we visit our neighbors, Room 29. Mr. Sillitto is the teacher. Science with all its experiments is the subject. Peter Grant, the keeper of our records, and collector of our money and Jim Bussard. the silent one with the enquiring mind, appear to be the tops in this subject. Bill Pizzey is our rare mathematical and scientific expert. Third period is English, teacher Mr. J. Stead. It is in this period Room 27 really excels. Pat Stauffer, noted for her pleasant smile, brought the honors to the room. She won the Essay Competition. Drill is a period enjoyed by everyone. Miss Hulland teaches the girls; Mr. Lindsay teaches the boys. Carole Ponech is our sport-minded lass. She plays on the All-Star team. Mervin Tetley is the tumbling expert and sets stiff competition in this activity. Literature in Room 14 with Mrs. Sutherland is a very pleas­ant period. Jim Troyanek, our good natured friend, always has his free reading assignment up to date. Rae Ramsden, a pleas­ant girl, and Myrna Davies, her friend, are two you will find deep in the book of poetry. It is in the H. and P.D. class taught by Mr. McKenzie that Room 27 comes to life. We have Jerry Kjeldgard, our hand­some boy from Foremost making his opinions felt. Dean Gough­nour explains "popularity" Brian smith expounds on the knack of telling jokes. Gloria Seaman, a friend to all, explains to the teachers and the class her theory on fairness. Social Studies, taught by Mr. Aoki, brings to the fore some of our oustanding future citizens. Charlene Dawson in her quiet manner explains how wars are won. Rod Smeed, the historian, knows his dates. Janet Stromsmoe, a new student to our school, excels in Current Events. Barbara Burns, our mas­cot, keeps the room informed as to homework, penny drives and such activities. Bob Glover, our practical man is at his best when discussing the merits of votes for women. Household Economics taught by Miss Gray gives the girls plenty of opportunity to develop their talents. We have Eleanor Forward, the girl from Saskatchewan, displaying her ability by making a jumper. Shirley Myers, the silent young lady is the cook of the class. Her food is really good. Julia Vigh, our pal, is the seamstress for the room. In shop Mr. Kuetbaach has the boys produce some very good work. Len Ward, our tall young man, is the jet engine expert. Allan Kulka, the jovial boy is the expert craftsman. In typing, Mr. Dewar is the teacher. Here we have a number of future stenographers. May Burnett with her quiet voice is at her best when at the typewriter. Emma Orosz who left us at Easter, was the first to hand in her lesson assign­ment. Ken Johnson, the boy from Suffield, was completely at home while at the typewriter. Ed Bagyenka, our Student Coun­cil member, treasurer to be exact, did all his written work on the typewriter. He left for Calgary. Have you ever heard Room 27 sing? You really should. We were nothing short of excellent, at least Miss Kunst thought so. Pat Ellis, our expert gum chewer, was the star soloist in the operetta, "May Day in Weiladay " Loreen Schawalder with her sweet smile, helped make the operetta the success it was. Mr. Watson, our home teacher, is very proud of his room and we are proud of him. Mr. Watson is very jolly at the right times. He is fair and praises no one person. We thank him for a pleasant year. We thank the teachers who so quietly overlooked our shortcomings. We look into the future with high hopes and high ideals. Each of us will develop his own poten­tial abilities. SHIRLEY WYLD—A pleasant girl who contributes much to Room 31. GAYLE BURNS—’Teen ager with that happy go steady look. FERN OLSEN—Boys are very important! DONNA PETERS—Quiet blonde in the inside row. ANNE SCULLEN—Soloist in the operetta. RAY SLY—We are proud that he is our room representative. TOM McDOUGAL—Doesn't approve of homework. SONJA BENTSEN—Pet love: coming late. GRETCHEN WARREN—I don't like to repeat gossip, but what else can you do with it? PATSY ZASADNY—One of our better athletes. TERESA THOMAS—"Terry" the quiet type. WILHELMINA BOSMAN—Why should one person be so smart? RUTH STRINGHAM—Our school orchestra member. LARRY PETRIE—Seems to like to do homework on the black­board. RAYMOND HEGY—Secret ambition, to be the first out of the room. RON ARCHBOLD—"Itch" loves hockey. JEANETTE WINGET—The girl with the long black hair. DOROTHY SIBBET—A very welcome addition to Room 31. SYDNEY HUCKVALE—She is always bubbling over with en­thusiasm. AUDREY BARRINGTON—A small person with a lot to offer. DONALD TERRY—Small dynamic basketball star. DOUGLAS HARRIS—What a mess your desk is in! As we near the close of another school year, we stop to look back at the many pleasant (?) memories of these past months. Although we have only two more months of torture left, and the final exams to look forward to, I think we will all agree that this has been an eventful year in our first year of grade nine, and we hope our last! Room 31 itseh has been quite active in more ways- than one. We never did get to put on our assembly and I suppose it was much better for cur audi­ence that we didn't. Our poor teachers have had their ups and downs with us, but on the whole we got along pretty well. Sometimes we wonder why the teachers get angry at us be­cause we always do our homework and we never talk in class. Poor Mr White sure knows when he has Room 31 for a period. (I wonder why) The poor man just sits at his desk and groans and then makes a vain attempt to cram something into our thick skulls. It must be awfully hard on his nerves when we are with him most of the time. Room 31 has a reputation throughout the school that would be hard to beat. We have our bad points but we have our good ones too. We may not be the quietest, best behaved class in the school, but we get along together and that's what counts. To have a good room you have to have spirit (which we've plenty of) and willingness to co-operate. I admit that we are pretty difficult sometimes, but when we really want to we can have fun and learn something too. Terrific kids go together to make a terrific room and Room 31 has some of the best. We may not be brilliant in school but we manage to plug along and usually do pretty well. ANDY SALY—Wants to drive a rocket to Mars. GERRY WOOD—Rainbow of Room 29. We of Room 29 think our room is the best in Hamilton Junior High. We are all sorry to leave it and will miss Mr. Sillito, our best and most humorous teacher. We've had lots of fun, many happy days, a few trials and tribulations, but they are in the minority. Throughout our school term we have been busy collecting pennies for the penny drive, and although we did not get the most, are not ashamed of our efforts in that respect. Unfor­tunately we have had no opportunity to put on an assembly We consider our Room 29 very capable of one. We have enjoyed skating parties and dances and wish to thank members of the orchestra for their musical numbers, espe­cially Gary Ellison and our school president, Darryl Sherwood. We are very proud to say they are both in our class. Several of Room 29 students are members of baseball, bas­ketball and hockey teams and we are proud of their efforts.
