It marks the end of a chapter covering a period of fourteen years when Wilson Junior High was housed in this building. Now due to continued expansion of educational facilities Wilson will be in a much more soacious building sometime next term - the present Winston Churchill plant. As we survey these past years it is recalled that we have gone through the boom years of the 1950's and the tension-packed era of the 1960's due to international strife and competition. Through these years a fine group of students have passed through Wilson and have continued their education elsewhere emerging as efficient, self- reliant and upright citizens. Some already have attained outstanding success in a wide variety of fields. It is hoped that all of our graduands leave us with a knowledge of good manners, a oleasing personality, courtesy, high ideals and a desire for work. If you have you will leave your mark in the world. But perhaDs the greatest obstacle you must overcome is a tendency not to discinline oneself. You are achieving more independence each year and in a few short years you will be on your own. If you have not achieved this self-control by then your life is going to be a series of temptations to which you may succumb. The good way of life is not an easy path. The purpose of a yearbook is to provide the student with a diary in ink and picture of the school year. In later years as you browse through this book you will relive many pleasant activities. May I congratulate the Yearbook staff for a job well done. ANNIVERSARY YEAR The Japanese Garden is LethbridgeTs Centennial project .EDITOR’S MESSAGE Sammy Davis, Jr. shook up thought in both the adult and teen worlds with his song "Don’t Blame It On the Children." He rapped the adults as only an adult can, and struck a needed blow for teenagers. But teenagers shouldn’t get too big for their Tee Kays. They shouldn’t be left out of the blame either. They hate to be made fun of from people whom they can’t stand, but they are almost eager suckers for the "adults’ greed for game." Teenagers need to realize the insaneness of their actions and the need to improve themselves and their surroundings. Teenagers and adults alike should take stock of them­selves and stop drifting around. Canadians are very capable of advancing themselves and the world around them. I would like to thank the wonderful people who helped me produce this 1967 Yearbook and Mr. Krulak for supervising the activity. ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE This year has been unique in our school and community, because it is a double anniversary year. The fall term of 1966 came within the 60th. anniversary of the City of Lethbridge, while the second term of the school year found us entering the Centennial Year commemorating Canada’s 100th. Anniversary since Confederation. During its sixty years of growth, Lethbridge grew from a small prairie coal-mining town to a modern city. During her century of progress, Canada grew from a country of pioneers, buffalo herds, small farms, lumber camps and few railways, to a modern industrial nation of twenty million. Much his been accomplished by past generations. It will be the duty and responsibility of the present generation, that is, your generation to push on this progress and make it a continuing process. To the pioneers who gave us the last century, we dedicate this yearbook. G. McKittrick sponsored a five dollar prize to the student writing the best article or drawing the best sketch on some interesting thing in Southern Alberta. Sherry wrote an interesting anecdote on the history of Lethbridge and so won the top prize. The exhibits submitted were: "Oil” by Barbara Spitzer and Holly Tokariuk "The Story of Oil” by Kirk Blair and Tony Hamza "Water Conservation” by Lynel Gaetz and Gerald Herter for which they got Honorable Mention "Photomicrography of Protozoa” by Bob McMann in which he placed FIRST .STUDENTST COUNCIL REPORT The Students' Council seemed to get off on the wrong foot, but after the by-election, meetings gained momentum. So far this year, we have had two skating parties and one film party. Approximately the same number of studai ts showed up for each party. We hope to have another party at the end of the year. A few ideas have been discussed, but nothing has been finalized. The meetings were generally smooth. The main topics were some sort of party, or "How come there always seems to be a phone bill to pay?" NEWSPAPER REPORT There were four editions of the newspaper. In each edition we tried to keep the students informed on happenings around the school, fashion news, and sometimes world news. The part of the paper which seemed to have the biggest appeal. tx>the students was the hilarious boys' fashions. Newspaper work has been carried out quite faithfully by all, and a special thanks is extended to everyone who helped. ARTS AND CRAFTS REPORT The supervisor of arts and crafts is Mr. Fekete. The grade eight girls are the only students allowed to join and attend shop club. These meetings are held from L*-00 o' clock to 5 o' clock. Each studnnt who attends shop club is to help clean up the shop ' • before she leaves. Some of the girls are doing plastics such as hearts, rings, and dice. Others are doing copper pictures of oriental dolls or animals. Some girls are doing leather work and making wallets and belts. Mr. Fekete has been patient with the girls who do not know how to operate the machines and tools with which we have had difficulty. PHOTO CLUB REPORT This year photo club has about 30 members. It was quite a successful year. We are going to put in a display near the end of May. We did all the pictures this year which was a task. I hope that the photo club will be successful next year. TUMBLING CLUB Facilities were inadequate to meet the number of people in tumbling club. Mr. Kosaka, in charge of this club, chose the better boys and girls to have private sessions to progress further in tumbling skills. These 10 or 12 people performed for the school in assembly and also in Wilson Junior High's "Variety Night" which was held in the Yates Memorial Centre.BADMINTON CLUB REPORT Badminton club got off to a rocketing start this year under the supervision of Mr. Umeris. We had an amazing 60 members who came quite regularly. We had various schedules for playing during the year, the first being at 4:00 until 5:00 on Monday and Wednesday after school. For the playoffs, the times were changed to &:00 to &:45 a.m. One would think that Mr. Umeris almost regretted the early hour in the morning he chose for badminton, for occasionally he appeared to have that "dazed, sort of slept in look." There were times when a few of us would get up a little courage to challenge him to a match, but he always perked up enough to win every one. Everyone co-operated willingly in putting away all equipment after each badminton session. A special thanks goes to Mr. Doram who never failed in having all equipment set up and ready to use before we arrived . and who always greeted us in his usual cheery manner. During the year we had two tournaments. The first place winners, followed by the second place winners in the final playoffs were: Boys’ Singles - Darrell Lagler; Dave Hegland Girls’ Singles - Joanne Hunt; Ursula Witzke Gr. VII Girls’ Doubles- Brenda Schmidt & Linda Rosenfelt; Rosslyn Coupland & Wendy Thomas TRACK AND FIELD CLUB REPORT The track and field club was organized to help boys prepare for track meets and to better their knowledge of track and field. Of course the club is under the stable direction of Mr. Kosaka. The boys are divided into 3 groups; midgets, juniors, and seniors. Quite a few boys have turned out and because of this there is a little bit of confusion. Who knows maybe some of these boys will become Olympic Champions?????? SCIENCE CLUB REPORT Science Club,held every Thursday night after school, brought out anywhere from six members upward. Animal dissections and mineral study seemed to be the most popular occupations, and under tfye helpful supervision of Mr. Langlands, equipment was usually (?) put away! Those who attended most regularly were: Charlene Marsden Marie Bardies Shelley Ibbitson Karen Bannerman Alan Howard Tom Allen Marlene Cookshaw Joanne Hunt We apologize for the absence of the Science Club photograph, but in taking the pictures this club was overlooked.YEARBOOK REPORT Because of the high cost of previous yearbooks, the Yearbook committee set out to produce a smaller, less expensive yearbook. Darcy Hamilton was chosen to be the editor and as it turned out, produced a fine plan for the book. Art work was done by Marlin Jang and Marlene Cookshaw. Judy Shaw organized most of the class biographies and Joanne Hunt prepared the club reports. Bobby McMann and Lawrence Loula did most of the photography. Anne Avramenko and Sandra Rak were helpful in many ways. The yearbook got a set back with the illness of the staff supervisor, Mr. Krulak, but in time things got rolling again. With the help of all the committee members who in the last months really put their shoulders to the wheel, we managed to complete this project. We hope you like it. BAND Mr. Castles refers to our school band as "something to be proud of." It can be agreed upon to the extent that the band is showing a better attitude toward what might have been a catastrophe last year. Mr. Haig is the general head of it but most people know that the "Old Haig" tradition which I won’t quote, so he gets band members to do some of his conducting while he (ahem) "shows interest" in the teachers. Excuse the expression Mr. Haig, All in all, the band has been quite good all year. Thanks a lot. Mr. Haig. WILSON GLEE CLUB REPORT This year’s activities included: 1. A Remembrance Day Program 2.
