In my thesis, I analyze Shakespeare\u27s The Winter\u27s Tale using the works of Victor Turner and Mikhail Bakhtin, searching the text for liminality, carnival, and communitas. The thesis accounts for a production of the play that I directed in Fall 2012, in which we sought to create liminal theatrical experiences for the audience, bringing them into a state of communitas. The extension of agency and community to the audience parallels the play\u27s opening, which occurs in the second half in its pastoral scenes
