The antioxidative activity of melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), a neurohormone secreted by the pineal gland, has attracted much attention in terms of the prevention of diseases associated with oxidative stress as well as radiation damage. However, there has been a controversy about the radical-scavenging reactivity of melatonin. In this study, we investigated the reaction of melatonin with galvinoxyl (GO) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals.Upon addition of GO radical to a methanol (MeOH) solution of melatonin at 298 K, the absorption band at 428 nm due to GO radical was gradually decreased.
